HARTINGTON — Neither rain nor clouds could dampen the spirit of the Cedar County Fair, which drew crowds, showcased talent, and delivered a weekend full of community pride.
Competitors in 4-H, FFA, and open class events filled barns, arenas and campers during this year’s Cedar County Fair, undeterred by occasional showers and warm weather.
Though some overcast days put a damper on a few events, Fair Board President Greg Heine credited the smooth operation of the fair to the board’s experience and teamwork.
“Everything went pretty well. You know, we had some issues with the rain,” Heine said. “We are a well-oiled system. Everybody comes together at the last minute and always seems to work together well.”
He said the only major weather impact came during Saturday night’s Chase Rice concert, which was still well attended.
“We were just hoping for a little more,” Heine said. “There was a small chance we wouldn’t be able to have the concert, but I’m so glad we were able to.”
Concertgoers had the chance to use the newly installed grandstands, which proved popular.
“They were well used this year,” Heine said. “They worked out really well—really easy to access. We were pleased with how well they worked.”
Heine also received positive feedback on the new instant replay screen at the rodeo.
“It was fun to watch,” he said. “Anytime we get a cool new piece of technology like that, people get excited, and we were really pleased with how well it worked.”
The Trinity Lutheran food stand also saw strong turnout, particularly for its broasted chicken, served Sunday.
“It went over great. We had a very good year,” said Trinity Lutheran Pastor Amanda Talley.
She said attendance was consistent with past years, and the broasted chicken was a hit.
“They started serving it around noon, and the chicken was gone by 12:45,” Talley said.
Looking ahead, Heine said the board is already exploring ways to improve, including expanding camping options.
“They were all filled this year,” he said. “We may want to do something different for next year.”
