1980: Hot, dry weather is straining local water supply

July 16, 1980

HARTINGTON — Hot, dry weather has put an increased demand on the city’s water system, but an odd/even system of water probably will not be necessary, according to city officials.

Mayor Gerry Miller said that although water pumped from the city’s wells reached a record high at over 11/4 million gallons on Thursday, July 10, a good water supply exists.

“Last week we were getting pretty low,” Miller said, “but we started up the new well so I don’t think we have a problem.”

Undoubtedly, there are older houses in the county, but the four-story wooden structure at 304 West Franklin Street has housed the Cedar County Historical Museum since the early 1960s.

Built in 1900, the house was presented to the Historical Society by the four daughters of A.K. Lammers July 16, 1980
