COLERIDGE– Coleridge started off its Fourth of July celebration with an Old Settler’s picnic at noon in the park. There were 200 registered for this event which also honored Dr. F. G.
Dewey for 55 years of service to the community.
A cake was baked and decorated in his honor by Mrs. Jake Meier and a purse of silver presented to him by members of the community. Mrs. Seth Anderson, chairman of the 4 C’s, read a poem about him and congratulated him.
Mayor Bob Yost also gave a talk in his honor. Dr. Dewey responded with a brief talk.
Prizes were awarded to the oldest person present, Dr. Dewey; to the couple longest married, Mr. and Mrs.
Lloyd Dennis, 52 1/2 years; longest married couple from out of state, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Jordan of Bellflower, Calif.; longest married couple out of town but in Nebraska, Mr. and Mrs.
Irvin Wait of Hartington; person from the greatest distance, Karen Pielsticker, of Bielifeld, Germany, and Sgt. and Mrs. John Heitman, of Hawaii; also honored for coming a long distance were Marvin Pedersen of Arlington, S.
D., Wilbur Dirks of Bellevue, Wash., Howard Munter, of Rome, N. Y., and Allan and Kim Jordan of Ballwin, Mo. Ruth Wallace was honored for being the teacher present who had been gone from Coleridge the longest time.
Booths displayed 4 C’s projects and “Know Nebraska Better”. All stands and concessions were operated by local persons.
A kiddie parade was held with 18 entrees. Prizes for these entries were won by: Gary, Byron and Denise Hansen, “The Grand Old Flag,” first place; Lans Rothfusz, Michael Hansen and Charlotte Tracy, “The Star Spangled Banner,” second place; Richard Kalin placed third with his “Cruising Down the River.”
An evening program, “Show Boat,” concluded the day’s events with over 1,800 persons attending. Mrs. Seth Andersen and Ed Brockman were emcees.
The crowd also enjoyed a large display of fireworks.
July 9, 1970
COLERIDGE — A break-in at the Great Plains Supply Co. was discovered Monday morning when it was opened for business. Lyle Thomas, manager, said that sometime Sunday afternoon or evening thieves entered the back door of the business by taking the hinges off the door.
Missing were three rifles, two of which were of high-caliber. The person or persons also attempted to enter the cash register, which contained no money.
It was also believed they were going to remove an adding machine and some tools, but both were left behind.
The incident was investigated by Everett Murkle, Cedar County Sheriff John Riibe and a special investigator of the Nebraska State Patrol.

COLERIDGE — Mr. and Mrs.
Adolph Pfund of 9830 Cayuga, Arleta, Calif., 91331, recently adopted two sons, Steven who is seven years old and Bobby who is three years old. The Pfunds also have two daughters, Debra, 17, and Joan, 14. Mrs. Ole Andrews is the maternal grandmother.

COLERIDGE — Darrell Nordby, 45, of Coleridge remains in serious condition in the St. Luke’s West Hospital in Sioux City following a one-car accident last Tuesday morning about 5:30 a.m. three miles north of Wayne. The auto entered the right ditch as it went south hitting the bank of a county road intersection.
The Wayne County Sheriff’s office reported the car flew 120 feet through the air, hitting the ground, traveling another 89 feet and rolled over. According to the Sheriff’s office he was thrown out of the auto. He was taken to the Wayne Hospital and then transferred to Sioux City.
It was believed that he had fallen asleep.

COLERIDGE — Fire Chief George R. Hefner has announced he is again imposing an open burning ban in Coleridge and the Coleridge Rural Fire Protection District. Chief Hefner said that because of the lack of rainfall the fire index is again moving toward the high danger area. The ban is in effect until enough rain falls to reduce the danger of fire. Last Wednesday the Fire Department went to a grass fire along Highway 15 about a mile north of the Coleridge Dehy.

COLERIDGE — The Coleridge Midgets won all three games this week. Coleridge defeated Crofton 2-1 with Mike Hoffart tossing a two hitter and John Hoffart having three hits.
Against Laurel, Coleridge won 8-4 with John Hoffart the winning pitcher. Coleridge defeated Hartington 7-1 as Kirk Olsen and Dave Anderson each had two hits. Mike Hoffart pitched a two-hitter. Coleridge may play for the league championship on Friday at Pierce, if Coleridge wins Tuesday over Randolph and if Crofton loses their Tuesday game.
July 11, 1990
COLERIGE — Three junior golfers from Coleridge won first place in their divisions at the Junior Golf Tournament at Hartington last week. They have been taking lessons the past five weeks, which was followed by the tournament. Scott Hansen won first in the 10-year old division; Tony Dirks, first in the 13-year old and Michelle Frerichs, first in the eight year-olds.
Others from Coleridge participating were: Mike and Jennifer Milbrath, Tony and Matt Kalin, Mike Frerichs, Matt Sayler, Chris Graham and Aaron and Angie Hochstein.

COLERIDGE — Tim Froendt and Bruce Froendt have made a generous donation of playground equipment in the form of four sand shovels for use of youth at the Coleridge Park.

COLERIDGE — Coach Amy Smith at the Coleridge Community Schools conducted a Volleyball Camp last week. Special awards were given during the week. In Point Hitting, Amanda Arens was high on Wednesday, Courtney Krei on Thursday and Jessica Kalin on Friday.
