Jones throws hat in the ring to run for Sheriff

July 9, 1915

COLERIDGE — Mrs. John Dugan of Pearl Creek was seriously hurt in an accident Saturday on her way to attend the celebration at Coleridge with her son, Gene, and little daughter, Margaret.

The buggy tongue came down and the team became frightened and tipped the occupants out of the buggy.

Mrs. Dugan was taken to the home of Mrs. Flynn and was given prompt medical attention.

She had several ribs broken and was considerably bruised. At present, she is reported out of danger.

July 7, 1920

LAUREL — W.T. Graham of Omaha departed Saturday evening for a two week’s business trip to New York. He writes the Advocate that he will be at several points in that state and New England, including Boston. His daughter Helen accompanied him.

LAUREL — Miss Rebecca Schembeck of Lincoln has accepted the position of French and Latin teacher in the Laurel High School for the coming year. She graduated this year from the State University, being awarded the Phi Beta Kappa.

CONCORD — H.R. Bessire recently purchased from John Erwin of Concord, for the neat sum of $1,500, a male pig, considered, he said, the best ever sired by High Sensation, Nebraska grand champion 1919.

Bessire expects to show the pig at the Sioux City fair in the fall. In the meantime he will be on exhibition at Hill Crest Farm.

LAUREL — The Burlington people are moving back into their old station this week. It has been a year and one month since the stations were consolidated.

July 2, 1925

HARTINGTON - Four young men accused of stealing chickens, were taken to Pender this morning by Sheriff Peter Clarence to have a hearing before Judge Fitzgerald, who came up from Omaha to Pender especially for this matter.

The men who are in trouble are Floyd Thomas, Leo Horan, William Parker and Leonard Jordan. The first three were arrested last week and charged with stealing 20 chickens from John Dirks.

They waived preliminary examination, and were bound over to district court.

Leonard Jordan was arrested last Friday, charged with stealing 15 chickens from John Lammers, Jr.

Stealing chickens is now considered a felony, and a severe punishment can be meted out to offenders.

LAUREL — B.E. Jones of this city filed for the democratic nomination for sheriff and is now in the race for the office.

His uncle, Lindsey Case of Hartington has also filed for the republican nomination for the same office.

Morten of this city and her sister leave this week for an extended European trip which is sponsored by Mrs. Buelow, wife of the governor of the state.
