Felber Park to host post-season tournament

HARTINGTON — Felber Park will once again be the scene of a post-season American Legion baseball tournament.

Last year, the town hosted the American Legion Class C State Tournament with much success.

“We did a really fine job,” said Hartington Mayor Mark Becker. “They loved our facility and hospitality, so we’re able to host a district this year.”

The Class C, Area 1 Junior American Legion baseball tournament will take place July 11-15. The tournament will host teams from Hartington, Creighton-Bloomfield, Crofton, Plainview, Ponca and Wakefield.

With numerous family members, friends and fans expected to attend the tournament, business is sure to boom.

“Supporting the baseball program gives us a chance to highlight our town,” said Becker. “They get the chance to hang out in our parks and recreation and see our town. It’s a good way to promote our city.”

Becker said they hope to host more events as their facilities continue to improve.

“Right now, we have some of the best facilities around,” said Backer. “It has improved quite a bit over the last few years. We’re planning on hosting more.”

Don Whitmire, who coaches both the Junior and Senior American Legion teams, said they are pleased to host the competition.

“It helps grow the pride that we take in our programs,” said Whitmire. Whitmire gave credit to the community and its volunteers who help make the tournament possible. He said volunteers assist in almost every aspect of the tournament, from working at the concession stand to pitch counting during the game.

“I think it takes a village, a whole community to host these things,” said Whitmire. “If it weren’t for all the volunteers and our board members, this would not be possible.”

As preparations continue, Becker encourages the community to come and support the local team as they compete for a shot at the state tournament.

“I encourage people to come out and support our team. We’ve got a really good team this year. We hope that they can win the district and advance to the state tournament,” said Becker.
