WAHOO - The Hartington Dolphins endured a five-hour bus ride and the rest of the field in the Wahoo Swimming Invitational July 1 to bring home the team title with 515 points.
The runner-up was Blair, which was over 200 points behind the Dolphins with 296.
“It was a great day for us and a very long night,” said Dolphins coach Anna Reifenrath. “We didn’t get home until 1:30 a.m., but we were ready to compete when we got there.”
Several Dolphins scored big team points.
Hadley Dendinger swept her individual events in the 11-12 division. She finished first in the 100-meter individual medley, the 50-meter butterfly, 50-meter backstroke and the 50-meter breaststroke.
She also helped her team of Eli Cattau, Andrew Heusers and Max Climer to a win in the 100-meter medley relay and her freestyle relay team of Malyla Zach, Emerson O’Brien and Keira Carl to a thirdplace showing.
Piper Dendinger won the 100 individual medley and 25 breaststroke in the 9-10 division and placed second in the 25-meter butterfly and 25 backstroke.
Cattau and Andrew Heusers battled it out in the 11-12 division.
Cattau won the 100-meter medley and the 50-meter backstroke and was second to Heusers in the 50 butterfly and second in the 50 freestyle.
Heusers was right behind Cattau in the 100-meter medley, the backstroke and the freestyle after taking the gold in the butterfly.
Kyson Lammers and Joseph Barnell competed in a similar fashion in the 15-18 division.
Barnell won the 50-meter butterfly and finished second in the individual medley, breaststroke and freestyle; Lammers won the individual medley and breaststroke, was second in the backstroke and fourth in the free style.
Levi Steffen contributed several points in the 9-10 division with his first-place in the butterfly and backstroke, second in the individual medley and fifth in the freestyle and he joined Peyton Holan, Anders Peitz and Finley O’Brien to win the medley relay.
Eli Hochstein made the biggest splash in the 8 and under division winning the freestyle swim, runnerup finish in the backstroke, third in the individual medley and fourth in the breaststroke and anchored teammates Moses Carl, Ellie Mae Sudbeck and Luke Kleinschmit to victory in the freestyle relay and the same group was second in the medley relay.
Hartington was set to return to the pool July 7 in its own invitational before traveling to Blair July 9 before closing the season with the conference finals scheduled for July 13 in West Point.
