1965: Mill levy to go up slightly after construction of new fire hall

July 6, 1950

COLERIDGE — Carl Janssen, Coleridge farmer, has an item that should qualify for Ripley’s Believe It or Not. While Mr. Janssen was cultivating corn the other day, he found a pocket watch that he lost 30 years ago. The French-made watch was still in fair condition. Mr. Janssen bought the watch when he was in France during World War I.

COLERIDGE — A quarter of an inch of rain fell here the 4th of July to give a boost to crops in this area. The drizzling rain, which fell most of the afternoon, put a damper on picnics planned for that day and rained out the scheduled ball game planned to be played here.

HARTINGTON— Property owners in Hartington will be taxed 2.1 mills more this year for municipal purposes than they were last year.

The total mill levy for the fiscal year ending May 1, 1966, was set at 20.9 mills by the city council at the regular meeting Tuesday. This is 2.1 mills more than the 18.8 mills levied last year.

This means that property owners will pay $20.90 per $1,000 of valuation compared to $18.80 per $1,000 a year ago.

The new fire station was responsible for the increase this year. The 2.1 mill increase was levied to retire the bonds on the station which was just completed the past spring.

Mill levies in all other funds are the same as last year, although the park maintenance fund and interest and sinking fund for swimming pool bonds were increased.

The park fund was increased $500 but the mill levy remains the same at 1.5 mills. The estimated total budget for the municipal government is $56,500.00 compared to $51,000.00 a year ago.

The levy is based on the total property valuation of $19,222,040.00.
