HARTINGTON — James Kathol has announced his retirement from the Hartington Rural Fire District Board after 18 years of service. Kathol moved into Hartington recently and is no longer eligible to serve on the rural board. He was first elected to the board in 1967. He was elected secretary and served in that capacity until 1973, when he became president.
He has served as president of the organization ever since that time. Kathol noted that the establishment of a 50-50 relationship with the Hartington Fire Department was one of the major changes to take place during his time on the Board.
Another milestone was marked in 1983 when the Hartington Rural Fire Board merged with the Fordyce Fire District. Robert Schmidt has been appointed by the board to fill Kathol’s unexpired term. Vice President Marcel Becker will head the board until the election in August.
