HARTINGTON - Junior Pfanstiel will be hosting a field day July 8, from 10 a.m.-Noon, highlighting the regenerative ag practices he has implemented on his farm.
Junior’s Farm is located due north of Hwy 20 on 552nd Ave, just west of the McLean turn. Lunch will be available after the field day at the newly opened restaurant 'The Breakroom' in Randolph (six miles east of the field loca tion), where the food is all locally grown.
This year, Junior planted four rows of corn 10 ft wide and left 10 ft of cover crop between the corn plantings through- out the field. The cover crops will be roller crimped in the whole field, providing weed control and fertility to the corn.
A warm season diverse cover mix will then be drilled into the regen strips. Later on in the season, a cool season diverse cover mix will be established. Strips will be rotationally grazed down to 50 percent before moving to the next one.
Some of the equipment used to accomplish these prac- tices will be highlighted during the field day, including a crimper, a drill and an inter-seeder highboy. There will be a root pit to investigate the cover crop rooting depths to see how far down the roots established prior to being crimped.
In addition to the field investigation there will be presen tations by:
• Nathan Choat of Green Cover will speak directly on the planned mixes that were chosen and why.
• Ben Beckman, UNL Livestock Extension Educator, will talk about the mixes and what each mix brings to the prescribed grazing and their benefits.
• Caro Cordova, Statewide Soil Health Specialist and UNL Assistant Professor, will talk about the benefits and soil health implementations, and discuss the root pit and what it means, and also will have the biomass analysis available and discuss how that ties into the entire soil health complex.
• Amy Timmerman, UNL Cropping Systems Extension Educator, will be on hand to demonstrate a water infiltra - tion kit and discuss its significance to your soil health and potential plant yield.
