City Council approves ordinance banning chickens, other fowl
HARTINGTON — Any local residents who have been relying on the sound of a rooster crowing to roust them out of bed in the morning will soon have to find a new alarm clock.
Chickens and other fowl have been banned inside the city limits for quite some time now, but the city ordinance never provided for a punishment for anyone ignoring the law.
The Hartington City Council took their first step toward rectifying that situation Monday, as they approved a new ordinance which not only bans chickens and other fowl from residing in the city, but also mandates a $100 fine for anyone violating the ordinance.
That fine would then grow by $10 per day for every day a resident ignores the demand to remove the animals.
Also Monday, the Council agreed to hire Stockwell Engineers, Yankton, S.D., for any work that might need to be done concerning the Skylon Ballroom Community Center.
Mayor Mark Becker said he wants to use the company because they assured him they could charge by the hour instead for each individual task.
Councilman Roman Sudbeck told Council members he has been looking into getting the long jump and pole vault runways redone at the Hartington Community Complex. The city decided to seek bids for the project.
