Dolphins look for success as they dive into a new season

HARTINGTON — The Hartington Dolphin swim team is making a big splash.

“It has been going well. We have quite a few new kids, which is great.” said Anna Reifenrath, who is now in her sixth year as the team’s head coach.

Her Father, Bruce Reifenrath, is a big help as well.

“My dad and I have a good system going with all of the different ages and skill levels,” said Coach Reifenrath.

They also get a lot of help from the experienced swimmers that have been in the program for several years, now.

Kyson Lammers, Hadley Dendinger, Allison Huesers, and Emily Climer have all played big roles in helping the younger kids, she said.

There are a total of 42 swimmers this year ranging in age from 7-18 years old.

The Dolphins have been working hard through unexpected challenges. Coach Reifenrath said.

“The heater in the pool did not work for the first two weeks of practice, but the kids were great sports and still worked very hard.”

Anna Reifenrath, who now lives in Lincoln where she teaches junior high school, said she enjoys coaching the Dolphins.

“I love when you have been working on a certain skill with a swimmer for a while and it finally clicks,” said Reifenrath. “Seeing how much all the kids improve over the summer is one of my favorite things.”

The Dolphins’ season kicked off last Saturday with a meet in Wayne.

The team has earned quite a reputation for its success as the Dolphins will be going for their third straight conference title this year.

The Dolphins opened the season last week with a third-place finish at Wayne.

The hosts won the meet with 643 points with Blair in a distant second at 361.5. West Point 346 and the Dolphins just a point behind at 345.

“It was very hot and windy and we were missing 13 swimmers,” said coach Reifenrath. “Many of the missing swimmers were key point scorers so we’re looking to move up the ladder at our next few meets. The swimmers we had competed very well and brought a lot of enthusiasm and were ready to put their hard work to the test.”

The Hueser brothers, Randall and Andrew had a fine day in the pool.

Randall won the 13-14 50-meter individual medley, the 50-meter butterfly and the 50-meter breast stroke and finished second in the 50 free style.

Andrew won the 11-12 100-meter individual medley, the 50-meter breast stroke and finished second in the 50 butterfly.

Not to be outdone, their younger brother Grant won the 9-10 25-meter backstroke.

Braxton Christensen brought home a first in the 11-12 50-meter backstroke, a second in the 50 freestyle and a third in the 50 breaststroke.

Joseph Barnell, took first in the 15-18 50-meter butterfly despite just having a cast removed from a broken arm a couple of days before the meet.

In his first ever swim meet, Eli Hochstein contributed 22 points to the team score with second place finishes in the 25-meter backstroke and freestyle as well as a third place showing in the 25 breaststroke.

Lucy Steffen chipped in with 18 points, taking two thirds, a fourth and a fifth in her events in what Reifenrath called a “very competitive” 13-14 girls’ division.

The Dolphins will compete again June 28 in West Point.
