HARTINGTON - The Hartington Post 4 Junior American Legion baseball team got two big wins on the road over the past week and dropped a close contest to Loomis on a three-game sweep through central Nebraska.
Post 4 sandwiched a 19-3 win over the St. Paul Post 119 Junior Legion on June 19 and a 20-1 win over the High-Line Bulls Post 290 Junior Legion on June 21 around a 7-4 loss to the Loomis Junior Legion on June 20.
Earlier in the week, Hartington dropped a tough 6-5 decision to Ralph Bishop League North Division leader Wayne, also on the road back on June 18.
In the Post 4 win over the Hi-Line Bulls, Hartington posted a 14-0 lead before Post 290 got on the board.
A nine-run second for the Post 4 Juniors put the distance between the two teams and a six-run fourth was the final nail in the 20-1 win.
Dawson Dresden and Rylan Fischer split the pitching duties in the four-inning contest, each going two innings with Dresden picking up the win surrendering just two hits and no runs and Fischer giving up a single hit and the run while striking out three.
Tate Fischer had the hot bat going 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring three times and driving in four runs, Drey Puppe was 2-for-3, scored three times and drove in three and Micah Cattau drove in three runs with his one hit.
Puppe, Grady Haberer and Sam Wiebelhaus all hit doubles in the contest.
In the loss to Loomis on June 20, Post 4 rallied in the sixth inning after heading into the frame down 5-0.
Hudson Whitmire and Tate Fischer opened the Hartington half of the fifth with a couple of singles before Hunter Bensen got aboard on an error by the center fielder, which left the bases loaded.
Haberer lifted a sacrifice fly which scored Whitmire and left runners on second and third.
Easton Hochstein came to the plate and promptly smacked a home run to right field to plate three runs and make the score 5-4.
Unfortunately, the rally ended there and Loomis responded with a couple of runs in the bottom of the inning to post the 7-4 final.
Hartington opened the road trip south with a big win over St. Paul.
The St. Paul Juniors actually led the game early on, scoring a couple of runs in the second, but Hartington plated three runs in the top of the third then added five in the fourth to get the train rolling down the tracks.
An eight-run fourth and three more runs in the fifth ended the game, 19-3.
Hochstein took care of business on the hill, tossing four innings of two-hit baseball, allowing the three runs while striking out eight St. Paul batters.
Haberer, Gavin Klug, Whitmire and Rylan Fischer all smacked doubles in the contest, Puppe, Cattau and Dresden each crossed the plate three times.
Bensen was 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in three runs. Tate Fischer also had three RBI’s on his one hit.
Before leaving on the trip, Post 4 had another road game with the team they were tied with in the North Division of the Ralph Bishop League, the Wayne Rolling Hills Supply Post 43 Juniors in Wayne June 18.
Wayne scored first in the game but Hartington responded with three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-1 lead.
Post 43 tied it up in the third then took a 6-3 lead heading into the sixth.
Whitmire opened the Post 4 sixth with a single then Bensen laced a double to left pushing Whitmire to third.
Haberer got to the plate and lined a double into left field to score Whitmire and Bensen.

A fielder’s choice out and a strikeout ended the threat and Wayne held on for the 6-5 win.
“Our bats took care of our business in the two wins on the road after the Wayne game,” said Post 4 coach Don Whitmire. “Our pitching was pretty solid as it has been really all season.”
Hartington defeated Pierce 17-2 Monday in a make up game. A complete recap and games with the West Point Juniors in West Point on June 25, the Tri County Juniors on June 27 at Felber Park and the first round of the Ralph Bishop League Tournament which is scheduled to begin June 28, will be in next week’s Cedar County News.
