1960: Area residents escape injury when plane hits bad weather

June 16, 1960

RANDOLPH - V. C. Havorka, Jr., Joseph G. Rogers, and Mr. Roger’s son, Pat, all escaped injury Saturday morning when a plane piloted by Mr. Havorka was forced down near Jefferson, S. Dak. due to bad weather.

After receiving a favorable weather report from Sioux City the trio had taken off from Laurel Saturday morning on a flight to Iowa City, Ia. where Mr. Rogers planned to attend a college class reunion.

Heavy fog near Sioux City forced Mr. Havorka to look for a spot for an emergency landing. When the plane landed in a pasture, as the pilot hit the brakes, it skidded on the wet turf and went through a fence into a listed corn field and flipped over on its nose.

Mr. Havorka’s glasses were broken in the mishap and he suffered a slight cut above one eye.

There was considerable damage to the plane, which is owned by Calvin Havorka of Laurel.
