2010: Grants will benefit auditorium, City Hall

June 16, 2010

HARTINGTON — Two city facilities will become much more energy efficient, thanks to two state grants.

The Nebraska Energy Office announced last week Hartington will pick up grants worth $65,655 to aid in making the City Auditorium and City Hall more energy efficient.

The funds will be used to replace all of the windows in the City Auditorium while new light fixtures, windows and doors with handicap accessibility will be installed at the City Hall.

These are 80-20 grants, which means the state will pick 80 percent of the bill to get the job accomplished, while the city must chip in 20 percent of the cost.

“The total cost of the two projects will be $82,069 – the city’s match will be $16,413,” said Economic Development Coordinator Carla Becker, who researched and wrote the grant. “The goals are to improve the energy efficiency and cost savings of having better windows and lighting.”

The City Auditorium was built in 1922 and is listed on the Nebraska State Historical Society Register.

“Since it is on the State Historical Society Register special considerations for the type of windows to replace the original windows will have to be followed,” Becker said.

Mayor Bill Yates said he was happy with the funds that will be received along with the long-range cost savings the city will see.

“It will definitely be a real help,” Yates said. “It should cut down on the heating and cooling costs.”

Hartington’s grants were part of a granting program that handed out $8.8 million in energy improvement grants to 96 city or county entities in Nebraska.

HARTINGTON — Hartington’s new police officer is well qualified for the job.

Mark Simpson arrived in Hartington from Utah with 14 years experience in law enforcement.

Simpson is certified as a police officer, emergency medical technician, and fire fighter as well as holding certifications for HazMat Operations and Incident Command Operations.

Some training will be needed to transfer Simpson’s peace officer certification to Nebraska.
