Seniors send SSC home with big loss

HARTINGTON — The Hartington Post 4 Senior Legion baseball team made short work of South Sioux City in Ralph Bishop League play with an 18-3 win in just three innings at Felber Park on June 13.

In fact, Post 4 scored a dozen runs in the bottom of the first inning which was plenty more than enough for starting pitcher, Koby Detlefsen, who gave way to Drey Puppe in the second frame after allowing only one hit and posting three strikeouts in the top of the inning.

After the Redbirds opened the game with a hit, Detlefsen shut them down with the 3 strikeouts.

Meanwhile, with a little help from South Sioux City, the Hartington offense got things started.

Tate Fischer worked a walk to lead off for Post 4 before a fly ball accounted for the first out.

Hunter Bensen stepped to the plate and while he walked, Fischer circled the bases during the Bensen at bat with a couple of steals and then scored on a wild pitch.

Bensen stole second base then Detlefsen rifled a fly ball into centerfield which was caught for the second out.

Four consecutive walks by the South Sioux City pitcher got things cooking for Post 4.

Grady Haberer, Brady Hochstein, Easton Hochstein and Micah Cattau walked to score a couple of runs then Mav Heine laced a single into left field to score another run and leave the bases full.

Fischer came back up to bat in the inning and eventually singled back up the middle and the scoring merry-goround continued.

Dylan Taylor singled past the shortstop, then a Bensen walk, a Detlefsen ground ball which was mishandled, a Haberer fly ball which was dropped by the right fielder, a hit batter, a walk and single by Cattau and the Hartington lead was at 12-0.

Ironically, the first inning ended when Heine struckout, but the South Sioux City catcher dropped the ball. Heine reached first base safely but Brady Hochstein was thrown out at home trying to score on the play.

South Sioux City scored three in the second but a Fischer walk opened the second for Hartington.

Catcher’s interference was called during Drey Puppe’s turn at the plate with two outs then a Haberer double scored a couple of runs.

Another walk and an error plated the three runs for Hartington in the inning, but again the third out was made at home plate when the Post 4 runner was trying to score on the error.

Cattau and Gavin Klug singled in the third, Heine reached on an error, and Sam Wiebelhaus was plunked by the SSC pitcher before Keaton Keiser reached on a fielder’s choice to drive in the walk-off run when Hartington got up by 15 runs in the third frame.

A scheduled game with Pierce was postponed on June 16 and Post 4 will be back in action June 18 with a trip to Wayne.

Post 4 will continue a busy week on the road with games against St. Paul Post 119 on June 19, the Loomis Seniors on June 20 and the High-Line Bulls Post 290 Seniors on June 21.

Hartington will be back in Ralph Bishop League play on June 23 with a trip to Wisner-Pilger/Howells-Dodge. The Pierce game will be made up on June 24.
