HARTINGTON — A lot has changed since the Skylon Ballroom was first opened in 1952.
The facility has been updated several times, and last October it was relocated half a mile to the west and is undergoing a huge expansion and renovation.
To help in those renovation efforts, the Hartington Chamber of Commerce presented the Skylon Preservation Fund with a $10,000 check Friday.
As of now, the ballroom’s new features include modern restrooms, a new bar area, an outdoor patio, a reception area, and a paved parking lot. Updates to the original ballroom include a new stage, upgraded HV AC and state-of-the-art sound and light systems.
As the project continues and nears completion, the fund has opened donations to citizens and businesses. A fundraising goal of $300,000 has been set to cover remaining improvements.
The Hartington Chamber of Commerce’s donation was just the start of the campaign. According to a press release from Skylon Preservation Board members, an additional six donors have also made contribions, bringing the total to $100,000 raised as of Friday.
To honor sponsors, a Donor Recognition Wall will be installed once fundraising is complete. Donors’ names will be displayed along with their favorite band as a tribute to the rich musical legacy of the Skylon, said the press release.
Donor levels include copper $100-$999, bronze $1,000 $4,999, silver $5,000-$9,999, gold $10,000-$24,000 and platinum $25,000 and above.
All donations and contributions are tax-deductible and should be made payable to the Hartington Community Foundation with a memo line to the Skylon Preservation Fund. Any payments should be mailed to or dropped off at the City of Hartington.

Mayor Mark Becker accepted a 10,000 check for the Hartington Preservation Campaign Friday from the Hartington Chamber of Commerce. Organizers are hoping $300,000 can be raised to help defray costs of the project. Also taking part in the check presentation ceremony were Chamber of Commerce Treasurer Bryce Lammers, Hartington Economic Development Coordinator Miranda Becker, Chamber Vice President Lisa Dendinger and Chamber President Ray Sukovaty.
