HARTINGTON - The Hartington Post 4 Seniors went through some growing pains over the past week while playing in the Lewis and Clark Tournament.
Growing pains in the fact Post 4 faced some quality pitching coupled with the fact Hartington just didn’t hit the ball well and it adds up to three consecutive losses in the tournament after a 7-0 win over Ponca in Ralph Bishop League play back on June 4.
In the tournament, Post 4 scored just four runs total in the three games, dropping the opener to Yankton Post 12, 13-1, losing 2-1 to Ashland in the second round then falling 10-1 to the Madison (SD) Seniors.
Madison took the lead in the second inning with a single run, scored three runs in the third, four in the fourth and two in the fifth to stop the game early by the 8-run rule.
Dylan Taylor scored the lone run for Hartington in the fourth inning after singling on a line drive up the middle.
He advanced to second on a ground out then moved to third on a passed ball and scored on another ground out.
Ashland scored all of the runs it needed in the second frame, crossing the plate twice to go up 2-0.
Post 4 wasted a good pitching performance by Breiton Whitmire who scattered six hits over his six innings of work, allowing just two runs striking out four and walking two.
He also helped his own cause by scoring the single Hartington run in the fourth to avoid the shutout and keep his team within striking distance.
In the opener against Yankton Post 12, Post 4 scored its only run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead, but Yankton answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs, added four in the second, one in the third and five in the fourth to again send Hartington home by the 8-run rule.
Post 4 also committed four errors in the contest.
Whitmire again scored the only run for Hartington in the game.
Post 4 opened the week of games on a positive note with the 7-0 shutout of Ponca Post 117.
Hartington opened the game with a run in the first inning then added two in the third.
Hunter Bensen opened the third with a walk, stole second and went to third on a passed ball.
Koby Detlefsen smacked a line drive to centerfield which was deep enough to get Bensen to the plate.
Grady Haberer singled on a pop fly to left field then advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on another wild pitch.
Brady Hochstein got him home on a ground out to the shortstop and Post 4 was up 3-0 heading into the fourth frame.
Hartington added a run in the fifth and three in the sixth to put the game away.
Haberer ended the game 2-for-3 at the plate, scored once and knocked in a run, Easton Hochstein and Mav Heine were both 1-for-3 and scored a run, Heine also drove in a run.
Brady Hochstein earned the win on the hill, throwing three innings, allowing four hits and striking out four Ponca batters.
Hartington will return to Ralph Bishop League play June 13 when hosting South Sioux City at Felber Park before another home game, this one with Pierce on June 16.
