CONCORD – Concordia Lutheran Church, a pillar of faith in the region since the late 19th century, will celebrate its 140th anniversary with a special worship service and community event Sunday, June 8.
The public is invited to take part in the 10:15 a.m. service honoring more than a century of spiritual leadership, fellowship, and service.
Pastor Heidi Wallace will deliver the message, and a special choir performance will help mark the occasion.
Founded in 1885 by Swedish immigrants, Concordia has stood as a beacon of hope, a sanctuary of worship, and a cornerstone of compassion for the Concord area. Now part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), the congregation continues to thrive with deep community roots and a steadfast mission of faith.
Concordia’s roots stretch back to the early days of Concord. In 1885, pastors would occasionally visit the home of Swen G. Anderson southwest of town. With 31 charter members, two donated lots became the church’s permanent home. Rev. Bergquist from Salem Lutheran in Wakefield organized the first congregation with a salary of $150.
The church’s mission — “Reflecting love in service to all through our family of faith” — shines through in its many ministries. Annual events include a soup supper, ice cream social, mother-daughter tea, and potluck meals. Members also assemble school kits, health kits, and collect food and donations for those in need.
