1990: Baird is elected as local VFW Commander

RANDOLPH — The Randolph Legion team won its season opener on Friday night over Crofton, 9-8 at the Randolph park.

Mike Lenhoff and John Lackas were on the mound for the locals.

Brian Bargstadt had a pair of hits and Lackas, Brad Johnson, Mike Rethwisch, Scott Backhaus, Marty Thies and Gene Arduser also collected hits.

RANDOLPH — The Randolph Town Team kept their record even at two wins and two losses for the season the past week as they lost to Crofton Wednesday evening 19-1 and on Sunday defeated Bloomfield 16-1.

RANDOLPH — Janet Isom was named to the Dean’s List for the second semester at Creighton University in Omaha.

Janet, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roley Isom, has completed her second year in the nursing program.

June 6, 1990

RANDOLPH — Gene Baird was elected commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars at its regular meeting Wednesday evening.

Other officers elected were Marlin Van Slyke, senior vice commander; Don Dendinger, junior vice commander; Hans Burmester, quarter master; and Willis McDonald, chaplain.

RANDOLPH — Three charter members of the Wareham Club who were honored at the club’s 50th anniversary celebration Thursday evening at Jean’s Dinette were Grace Cunningham, Ruth Gries and Loraine Sohren.

Dr. Pearl Hansen, Wayne State College faculty member, is a recipient of the Burlington Northern Foundation Faculty Achievement Awards. She was awarded $1500. Hansen is the daughter of John and Luella Hansen.

RANDOLPH — Almost everywhere you turn inside the Firstar Fiber plant in downtown Fremont you can find a connection to Randolph.

Having a hometown connection is one of the vital keys to the success of what’s becoming one of the Midwest’s most exciting recycling success stories.

Last month, the doors of the state’s only recycled tissue converting facility were opened for an open house to showcase the plant in action.

The facility is part of a goal of Dale Gubbels, Firstar president and 1971 Randolph High graduate, who hopes to create Nebraska’s first paper mill.

RANDOLPH — Approximately 400 persons feasted on burgers, brats and hotdogs at Sunday’s Fire Victims Benefit to help raise funds for those who lost belongings in the recent Sherwood Apartments fire.

Including matching funds, the event is expected to raise nearly $6,000 for the fire victims.

June 7, 2000

RANDOLPH — Joan Sauser of Norfolk, daughter of Jack and Mary Sauser of Randolph, earned a pair of gold medals at the recent State Special Olympics swim meet in Omaha.

She earned golds in both the 25-meter backstroke and 25-meter freestyle events.
