1945: Hartington Public School will have six new teachers

June 6, 1940

HARTINGTON — Mrs. L.M. O’Furey, owner and publisher of the Cedar County News since the death of her husband in 1937 revealed sale of the newspaper to Fred R. Zimmer of Sioux Falls, a veteran newspaperman and manager of the South Dakota network of the Associated Press.

HARTINGTON — Vandals hurled rocks at Shumway Lumber Co. building.

HARTINGTON — Dale Mallatt, 14, lit a match to see how much gasoline was in the tank of a car at the John Uhing farm.

He suffered severe burns in the explosion. The garage, machine and blacksmith shop burned, plus the car, a corn planter and a large quantity of seed grain.

June 7, 1945

HARTINGTON — Edgar Wortmann, 17 yearold son of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Wortmann, Bow Valley farmers, won top scholastic honors at Holy Trinity in a class of 37 seniors, the largest in the history of the school.

Miss Leone Pick, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Pick, ranked second.

June 7, 1945

HARTINGTON — Six of the vacancies in the Hartington public school faculty for the coming school year have been filled, Supt. C. A. Carkoski has announced. Contracts were recently signed by the six new teachers.

Carkoski announced the new teachers as follows: Miss Inez Knutson of Vermillion, S.D., first grade, replaces Miss Eleanor Jones.

Miss Evonne R. Wallin of Laurel, fourth grade, replaces Miss Alice Cooper.

Miss La Vera Cramm of Bloomfield, fifth grade, replaces Miss Ellen Leddy.

Miss Shirley Knapp of Westfield, Ia., commercial subjects in high school, replaces Miss Beryl Nelson.

Miss Juanita Raab of Sioux City, high school English, replaces Miss Shirley Hansen.

Miss Viola Mogck of Olivet, S.D., teaches high school English. She replaces Miss Naomi Harnett.

June 7, 1945

COLERIDGE — Mr. and Mrs. Ed Dirks and Mrs. Ed Lorang went to Sioux City to meet their son and brother, Wilber Dirks, who is home from overseas.

He has been in the army over three years and has received a discharge.

WYNOT — Pfc. Louis Pinkelman left Saturday for Los Angeles, Calif., after spending a twenty-one day furlough with his wife and other relatives.

OBERT — Seaman 2/c Matthew Nielsen arrived home Sunday evening to spend a week’s leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Niels Nielsen.

BELDEN — Pvt. Bernard Smith is now stationed on the island of Luzon it was reported this week.

BELDEN — Elmer Ayer received word that his nephew, Pfc. Elwin Lofgren, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vernie Lofgren of West Point, had been killed in action on Okinawa May 7. Mr. and Mrs. Lofgren formerly lived on a farm near Belden.

BELDEN — Harold McDonald, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer McDonald, is now at Frankfurt, Germany.

BELDEN — Mrs. Vernie Middleton received word from her son, Pfc. Dale Middleton, that he had been moved to Port Lyantez, Morocco. He had been to Casa Blanca and saw Eugene Brewer, a former Belden boy, when he was there.

LAUREL — Pvt. Marvin Wickett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Verner Wickett, has been transferred from Fort Leavenworth, Kans., to a motorized division at Fort Knox, Ky.

LAUREL — Lt. Warren Stage, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Stage, who was stationed at Camp Ord, Calif., has left for overseas duty.

HARTINGTON — First Lt. Esther Stevens of Victoria, Kans., arrived Friday and will spend a week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Stevens.

LAUREL — Seaman 1/c William Hansen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Magnus Hansen, who had spent two years in the Aleutians, is now stationed at Bremerton, Wash., where he is attending an aviation mechanics school.
