1955: Obert, Maskell residents approve school merger

HARTINGTON— Dick Lammers, hard hitting outfielder, suffered a broken jaw and a number of teeth at Creighton, when struck by a batted ball during batting practice.

June 1, 1950

HARTINGTON — The third supervised playground program sponsored by the Hartington Chamber of Commerce will open here June 12 under the direction of “Jolly” Carlson assisted by Miss Carolyn Olson. The opening day will be devoted to registration, starting at 9:30 a.m. at the playground in Felber Park. If weather prevents outdoor activity registration will be held in the auditorium basement.

June 2, 1955

HARTINGTON — Residents of the Maskell School District voted to merge with the Obert School District at a meeting in the school Friday evening.

Mel Everingham and Floyd Alexander of the State Department of Education attended the meeting and explained the situation in the two districts and answered questions regarding reorganization.

Residents of the Obert school district recently voted in favor of merging with the Maskell School District. The two schools are within two miles of each other. An area survey of the Obert and Maskell schools by the State Dept. of Public Instruction indicated the two schools should combine. This was announced at a January meeting.

The Dept. of Instruction report stated that if the two schools combine there would be an enrollment of 40 in the high school, but by 1963, they estimate this number would increase to between 75 and 82. These numbers were based on present grade school enrollment.

June 4, 1960

HARTINGTON — James A. “Art” Walz, 27 years the owner of the Hartington Hatchery, announced the sale of the business to William Dresden, a former employee.

Mr. Walz retains ownership of the buildings, which houses the hatchery and O’Gara’s Market.

HARTINGTON—The social problems created by widespread use of drugs is to be discussed at a special Town Hall meeting this week at the K.C. Hall.

HARTINGTON — Cub and Boy Scouts of the Mid-America council, Boy Scouts of America, are presently making plans to conduct their annual “Good Turn Day” for the handicapped at Goodwill Industries.

HARTINGTON — Red Cross Swim Program will start soon for all grades of swimmers, a registration fee of $2.00 for anyone who does not have a season ticket.
