WYNOT - After opening the 2025 season with a couple of losses, the Wynot Expos are heating up along with the weather winning four straight dating back to May 18.
Wynot opened the season on the road at the Yankton Tappers in a non-South Central Baseball League contest and dropped the game 12-5 on May 11, Dropped a league contest on May 15 to the Tabor Bluebirds in Wynot 8-0, then took off on a fourgame winning streak.
“We’ve got some new guys this year who have started playing baseball again or have used up their Legion Baseball eligibility,” said long-time Expos skipper, Lee Heimes. “It’s been great to have the extra guys and we’re starting to round into shape to have a pretty good summer.”
If you know the coach, you realize the captain of understatement, just uttered a mouthful about Wynot’s chances this season.
The Expos grabbed their first win of 2025 on the road at Freeman May 18, 9-5; defeated the Irene Cardinals in a doubleheader, 11-1 and 7-5 on May 25; then bettered the Lesterville Broncs 14-4 May 29 to improve to 4-2 and 4-1 in the league.
“We’re starting to hit the ball a little bit,” said Heimes. “And we have some solid pitching from a lot of different guys.”
Carson and Jalen Wiseler sparked Wynot against the Broncs. Carson tossed four innings, allowing just two hits and one run while striking out three while Jalen drove in five runs on two hits.
Peyton Wieseler also clobbered a 2-run homer, Heimes singled in a couple of runs and David Schenk drove in one with a double.
Lesterville took the lead in the first inning with a run, but the Expos plated four runs in the third and three more in the fourth to take over the game.
In the second game of the sweep over the Cardinals, it was Jalen Wieseler again who paved the way for Wynot with three singles, one in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh as the Expos came back twice in the seven-inning contest.
Irene grabbed the lead, breaking a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third frame with a pair of runs.
Wynot took a brief lead in the top of the fifth with three runs but the Cardinals answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own.
Wynot took the lead for good in the sixth. Devin Lammers opened the Expos sixth with a walk then Colin Wieseler singled past the shortstop.
Landon Wieseler got on board on an Irene error to load the bases.
Carson Wieseler drove in Lammers on a sharply hit ground ball to short before Jalen Wieseler got a ground ball past the shortstop and the game was even 5-5.
Heimes was hit by the Irene pitcher to re-load the bases the Cardinal third baseman mishandled a Jackson Sudbeck ground ball to score a run and give Wynot back the lead, 6-5.
A Peyton Wieseler sacrifice fly, or line drive to center, chased home Jalen Wieseler after tagging up.
Irene got a runner on in the bottom of the sixth and two on in the final frame, but Sudbeck pitched out of both innings to get the win on the mound after going the distance, scattering eight hits over his seven innings of work, allowing five runs while striking out seven.
In the firs game of the twin bill, the Expos took control from the first pitch, scoring two in the first inning, three in the third, two again in the fourth and a single run in the fifth.
A 3-run seventh sealed the deal. Landon Wieseler earned the win on the mound going six innings while allowing five hits and a run.
Heimes was 1-for-2 at the plate, drove in three runs and scored twice. Dylan Heine was 2-for-2 and scored once.
The Expos will return to action June 5, when they take on Menno in a SCL contest.
