Erwin, Puppe pick up State hardware

OMAHA - Laurel-Concord-Coleridge track coach, Shannon Benson and his assistant coaches took four participants to the Class C Nebraska Track and Field Championships at Burke Stadium on May 23-24 and one Lady Bear and one Bear brought home some hardware from the meet.

“Wehadaverygoodweekend at state,” Benson said. “It was a great experience for everyone involved.”

Tali Erwin, was the lone LCC athlete in Omaha with any experience at all and she made themostofherthirdtriptostate bybringinghomeafourth-place medal in the high jump.

“Talihadaverygoodweekend jumping,” said Benson. “She saved one of her best jumping days for the state meet and had no misses through 5-feet-2-inches and came very close to getting over 5-04. She was a three-time state qualifier and improved her placement every year. She had a super LCC career and will be missed next season.”

Trinity Chatfield of Ord won theeventwithasuccessfuljump of 5-04 to lead three jumpers that cleared that height.

Erwin tied Kendyl O’Hare of Kearney Catholic and Janessa Overgaard of Homer at 5-02 as all three athletes had no misses before reaching 5-04.

Erwin had a couple of teammates competing in Omaha.

Junior, Kate Tasler ran in the 1,600-meters and sophomore Faith Galvincompetedinthe3,200-meters. “Kate experienced her first state meet,” said Benson. “She is a very good runner and very strong and determined, she had gotten better all season long.”

Tasler finished 22nd in her 1,600-race with a time 5-minutes, 49.45-seconds.

MadisonShawofSandyCreekwon the Class C gold medal in the event with a time of 5:16.15.

“She was a GNAC champion and we could always count on her to run hard and be one of our leaders of our distance runners.” The coach said. “She is excited and motivated to returnnextyeartorunagainandhave a chance to show everyone how hard she works and improve on her time.” Galvin also ended up 22nd in her event, the 3,200.

“Faith posted one of her best times of the season,” Benson said. “She is very strong and loves to run and was very excited to run at state. She stayed steady the whole race and finished well.”

Galvin posted a time of 12:57.28 for her eight trips around the Burke Stadium oval.

FaithandKatewerepartoftheLCC cross country team this past fall and it showed as the track season went on,”saidBenson.“Theyseemedtoget stronger and faster. LCC will have an exciting cross country season next fall and an exciting season on the track in the distance races next spring.”

Jaelyn Witter of Kearney Catholic won the Class C 3,200 with a time of 11:41.97.

KearneyCatholicwonthegirls’title with 79 points followed by Syracuse with 50.

Drey Puppe was the lone Bear competing in Omaha but what LCC lacked in quantity, Puppe made up for with quality, placing fifth in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.30 seconds in the finals.

“Drey has been battling some lingering injuries the past few weeks, but battled in the district meet to qualify for state in two events,” said Benson.“Hemadethefinalsinthe110 hurdles and improved his position in the preliminaries by moving up from sixth to fifth.”

Jaxon Knisely of North Platte St. Patrick’s won the 110 highs in 14.11 seconds.

“Drey’s future is great, he works hard and wants to keep a very strong familyandLCChurdletraditiongoing strong,” his coach said. “He was the only freshman that qualified for the hurdlesinClassCbutthatwasn’tgood enough, he wanted to make the finals and get a medal, and he did just that.” Perkins County edged out West Holt in the Class C boys’ team race with 61 points, the Huskies were right behind at 57.
