County Commission discusses closing road

HARTINGTON — Cedar County Commissioners discussed the possibility of closing a northern Cedar County road and discussed the installation of a fire alarm system for the Cedar County Transit system at their Tuesday meeting.

Cedar County Clerk Jessica Schmit said she received a $750 bid for a one-sensor alarm system from Hartelco that detects heat changes in a building. Smoke detectors would also be required, if they go this route, said Board Chairman Dave McGregor.

Cedar County Highway Supt. Carla Schmidt said she did a study on a Dixon County/Cedar County Road - 576 Ave., between 884-886 Road in northern Cedar County.

She suggested closing all but the north half mile of the road, which was originally established in 1904.

‘’The majority of that road hasn’t been used as a road for 50 years,’’ Schmidt said.

Her main concern is that two parcels would be landlocked if the road is closed.

‘’Getting to that road was very difficult. The old road bed is still there, but it’s rugged,’’ she said.

A public hearing to close the road should be scheduled in the near future, Commissioners said. Since this is a county line road, it will take awhile to get it closed, however, Schmidt said, because Dixon County must also hold a hearing to close the road.

Schmidt also presented the board with two right-of-way permits. She told Commissioners she also plans to get bids for gravel.

The board also approved four building permits and three variances presented by Planning and Zoning Administrator Tim Gobel. All seven had previously been approved by the County Zoning Board.
