1965: Area farms are damaged by spring storms

May 26, 1965

HARTINGTON — Storm clouds moved across Cedar County Monday afternoon and brought scattered reports of tornado damage and heavy rains.

Damage was mostly to trees with some building damage reported. A storm cloud moved across the Bow Valley area about 2 p.m. and caused much tree damage.

A cattle and machine shed on the Anthony Pick farm five miles north of Hartington received considerable damage in this storm. A pillar on the Pick house was also blown down.

Rudy Kathol, who lives about two miles north of the Picks, said he was in the field when he saw a dark black cloud heading for his place.

Kathol made it to the house before the cloud and went into the cellar until the storm passed.

Many trees on the Kathol farm were blown down as was the case all along the pass of the cloud.

Other reports noted damage to the Aten Resort area and to the Laurel area.
