PONCA — The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge track teams traveled to Ponca May 15 for the C-3 Track Meet and came away from the day with four athletes in five events extending their seasons by qualifying for the Nebraska Track and Field Championships May 23 and 24 at Omaha’s Burke Stadium.
“We had a great day at the district meet,” said LCC coach, Shannon Benson. “We had multiple best marks by a number of athletes.
It’s always nice to have your best day on the most important day.”
The Bears and Lady Bears both ended up seventh in the team standings with the Bears posting 29.5 points and the Lady Bears accumulated 46.
Cedar Catholic won the boys’ crown with 151 points just doubling runner-up Homer which finished with 75.
Pender won the girls’ title with 124.33 points with Wisner-Pilger second with 76.33.
Freshman, Drey Puppe was the top Bear, qualifying for Omaha in two events.
Puppe, one of the front runners in the state in the 110-meter high hurdles, won that event with a time of 15.28 seconds despite nursing a slight injury and was second in the high jump based on misses as he tied Tri County Northeast’s Jackson Belt after clearing the bar at 5-feet-11-inches.
“My hip has been bothering me but I wanted to make sure I got down to Omaha,” Puppe said. “I don’t really feel it so much during the race but as soon as its over it kind of hutst, it kind of bothers me a little.”
“Drey has worked hard all season and pushes himself hard,” said Benson. “He has put in a lot of time and has high goals. This is just the beginning for him.”
The Bears also got points from Jaylen Carpenter in the shot put who used a heave of 46-02 to take third and gather six team points.
Dayton Korth also got sixth in the pole vault.
The Bear’s 4x800 relay squad of Hunter Benson, Sebaastian Van Drongelen, Shane Langford and Carter Korth placed fourth with a time of 9:34.25 and the 4x100 team of Nathan Boysen, Weston Patefield, Benson and Hunter McGhee placed sixth in 50.36 seconds.
Tali Erwin earned a seat in the van for the third time in her career, winning the high jump at the district meet after clearing 5-02.
“Making it for the third time is a great way to end her career and senior year,” the coach said.
“She has consistently been a great scorer for us since she set foot on the track.”
Kate Tasler and Faith Galvin each qualified in the distance races. Tasler was third in the 1,600 with a time of 5:45.73.
“Kate has been a leader of our team all season and has pushed herself to get better,” Benson said. “She was the GNAC champ and making it to state was a great way to end a super season.”
Galvin was third in the 3,200 with a 13:11.08 and, along with Tasler, made it to Omaha as one of the six fastest times in the district meets that finished outside of the top two in each district.
“Faith has had a great season and saved her best day to run her best run,” the coach said.
“She has been to state cross country and state track will be another great experience for her.”
Freshman,Taelynn Settje also had a fine day in her first ever district track meet.
Although not making it to Omaha, she set herself up to be a front runner next season.
Settje earned a couple of medals in the sprints and just missed a long jump medal.
“Getting third in the 100 was really great and to run my best time of the year makes it even better,” Settje said. “This makes me hungry for next year. I’m going to work really hard to get better and get down to the state meet.”
The Lady Bear youngster ran the 100 in 13.46 seconds for third, and the 200 in 27.72 seconds for fifth. She also finished seventh in the long jump, just one spot out of the hardware.
The Lady Bears also earned points from their three relay teams including a runner-up finish in the 4x100 relay.
Hattie McCorkindale, Settje, Grace Galvin and Jolynn Kinkaid circled the track in 53.91 seconds for second behind Tri County NE.
The 4x800 squad of Tasler, Justice Olson, Tyler Recob and Carlie Kvols covered the distance in 10:42.84 for fourth and the 4x400 group of McCorkindale, Erwin, Recob and Kvols placed sixth.
“I’m very rpoud of our team and how hard they worked throughout the season and how we performed,” said Benson. “We have a bright future and some great talent. I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to my assistant coaches, the parents, the school and the community for all of their support.”
