COLERIDGE — Mr. Frederich Albert Sherer, at age 52 years died late Monday, May 16, at the Ray Kalin farm following a heart attack.
He had been in ill health for the past two years. Burial will be in the Coleridge Cemetery May 19, 1960
COLERIDGE —Mr. Vance D. Viergutz of the Randolph Times, former Blade editor, who was awarded one of the four top awards for community service given by the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben, donated his prize money for the erection of a new trophy case in the new school building. The $200 prize was to be awarded to any project that Mr. Viergutz designated in the community in which it was won.
Donald Fluent, son of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Fluent, won Valedictorian honors at the 62nd Annual Commencement Tuesday evening at the Legion Hall. Class Salutatorian was Adrian Rathgeber, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Rathgeber.

LAUREL — Mrs. Myron Dirks of Dixon, was one of more than 100 rural home-makers from Nebraska, Iowa and Kansas who were honored in Omaha Thursday at the annual Rural Homemakers Recognition Day. Paul Noe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Noe of Dixon, a sophomore at the University of Nebraska, was honored for high scholarship.

COLERIDGE — Coach Percy Stielow presented the Most Valuable Athlete of the Year award to Roger Hahne last Tuesday evening at the Athletic Banquet.
The award and banquet are sponsored annually by the Coleridge Commercial Club to all participants in the school’s athletic program. The award is based on participation and excellence.

Members of the 1970 team were Coach Scholle, Coach Cherry, Kevin Frerichs, Brent Stapleman, Randy Bayne, Roger Domina, Dave Fox, Leroy Dempsay, Rich Carlson, Ron Brodersen, Fred Kalin, Marlin Kalin, Dennis Krei, Randy Rohde, Greg Wolfe, Randy Hoffart, Roger Hahne, Jess Frerichs, Ed Kalin, Randy Fox, Alan Puntney, Chad Frerichs, Student Managers Donald Johns and George Hefner, Stan Sim, Kevin Kollars, Kirk Kunze, Dennis Milander, Chuck Eddie, Rich Rohde, Kerry Henry, Terry Wilkerson, Kip Avery, Ralph Holcomb, Ron Cautrell, Floyd McCart, Marlin Hansen and Doug Flaugh.
The trophies the group has won this year have been Runner-up Cedar County, Runner-up Lewis & Clark Conference, winning 880 Cedar County, winning 2-mile relay Cedar County, winning 880 relay at Bassett, and winning 100 yd. dash Blue Devil Relays at Wayne.

COLERIDGE — The Coleridge baseball team under the direction of manager Dr. H. P. Lortz blanked Wakefield in a practice game Sunday afternoon by the score of 15-3.
Claire Jordan opened his season with a homerun. Shaw, Starks and Hefner pitched the game for Coleridge and allowed only five hits.

LAUREL — Voters of School District No. 54 turned down a bond issue for $975,000 at a special election Tuesday. Seven hundred and eight persons cast ballots, with 420 voting against the proposed elementary addition. There were 288 for the proposed complex.

COLERIDGE — Last weekend Muffy Mitchell, Ann Brandow and Kim Bartling participated in the Girls’ State Track Meet at North Platte. Muffy ran in the 100 meter hurdles, Ann in the 1,600 meter run and Kim in the 3,200 meter run. Byron Kalin participated in the Boys’ State Track Meet in the pole vault, Marlin Papenhausen qualified for the high jump, and the 2-mile relay consisting of Brian Hefner, Monte Olsen, Scott Anderson, and Brian Feelhaver also qualified.

LAUREL- Laurel’s volunteer firemen purchased 25 new pagers recently at a total cost of $6,071. According to fire chief Mel Olsen, all of the money was earned through the Firemen’s Stag, the department’s annual fundraiser. The new Motorola pagers replace seven older models which had been on loan from the Laurel Rescue Unit and are smaller and easier to carry than the older ones.

LAUREL- Brad and Shelly Rath of Laurel are parents of a daughter born Sunday, May 19 at Providence Medical Center in Wayne. She weighed 7 pounds, 15 3/4 ounces and has been named Stephanie Kay.

the Grand Chapter of Nebraska, Order of Eastern Star, during ceremonies in Lincoln Thursday evening, May 16.

LAUREL- Thirty-five seniors from Laurel-Concord High School embarked on their high post high school careers Sunday in a commencement ceremony that is likely to be remembered more for one speech than for the thousand of dollars in scholarships that were awarded. One of the most honored students was the class valedictorian, Allen George of Dixon. George created some of the afternoon’s most stunning moments after he mounted the podium for the traditional valedictorian’s address. In his speech he delivered a stinging rebuke to the Laurel-Concord Board of Education for its decision to fire a popular English instructor, Alan Lemke.

LAUREL- Dr. Alan Lemke and Mrs. Mildred Monk were the winners of the school district’s most prestigious teaching award, the C.D. Haskell Memorial Awards. The winners were selected by last year’s graduating class as the teachers most helpful to them during their secondary and elementary school years.

COLERIDGE- Jade and Dawn Addison, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Addison, represented Coleridge in four events at the State Track meet this past week. Jade placed fourth in the mile. Dawn, a freshman was in the relays. Jade ran in the half mile and the mile. They are the granddaughters of Mr. and Mrs. Craig Addison of Laurel. May 22, 1985 LAUREL- Dave Anderson of Laurel won the Cedar View Men’s Open Golf Tournament after one hole of sudden death Sunday, May 19. After 27 holes of golf, Anderson, Jerry Nelson and Bob Prazak were tied at 114.
