Ngebeh, Harder headed to Omaha, Cardinal track teams compete in districts

HUMPHREY — Mabel Ngebeh and Luke Harder both grabbed tickets to this week’s Nebraska Track and Field Championships at Omaha’s Burke Stadium with Classes C and D competing on May 23 and May 24.

Ngebeh won her ride in the discus after a toss of 110-feet-4inches which was good enough for fourth and was an automatic qualifying distance.

Harder also made it as an automatic qualifier in the high jump after clearing the bar at 6-0.

Wausa won the girls’ championship here at the D-3 District Meet hosted by Ar chang e l s Catholic. The Lady Vikings edged out the hosts, 115.33 to 107.33 to claim the gold plaque.

Hartington-Newcastle won the boys’ title, also with an 8-point advantage, over Howells-Dodge, 112 to 104.

The Lady Cardinals accumulated 29 points for seventh while Harder was responsible for all of the Cardinal’s points with a pair of fourthplace finishes as the Redbirds finished eighth.

Emily Gilliland had a good day on the track, bringing home a couple of fourth-place medals in the 400, after corcling the track once in 1-minute, 3.7-seconds and she circled the oval twice in 2:39.02 for fourth in the 800.

Abbey Backer was fifth in the 100, fourth in the long jump and sixth in the 200 while Brooke Meier was fifth in the 300 hurdles and sixth in the 100 hurdles.

Lilly Kuchta led a 5-6 finish in the triple jump taking fifth by just one-quarter of an inch farther than teammate Emilee Olson.

The Lady Cards also scored in all three relays, with the 4x400 squad finishing fifth and the 4x100 and 4x800 quartets each finishing sixth.

The 4x400 team consisted of Gracie Wortman, Braylee Kelly, Meier and Gilliland and they ran the event in 4:54.40 for fifth.

The 4x100 team of Olson, Ngebeh, Kuchta and Backer toted the baton around once in 56.59 seconds for sixth and the 4x800 team of Gilliland, Kelly, Alaina Schulz and Jenna Guenther made eight laps in 12:47.71 also for sixth.

Harder used his 6-foot high jump and a 39foot triple jump to place fourth in both events and account for all eight of the Cardinal’s points.
