Randolph Women’s Club hosts speaker

RANDOLPH - On Monday, May 12, the Randolph Women’s Club hosted a presentation sponsored by Humanities Nebraska and the Friends of Lied Randolph Library.

Cherrie Beam-Callaway, a storyteller from Fremont, gave a spellbinding first-person performance as ‘Mariah Monahan.’

Based on historical facts, the story begins in the mid 1800s when Mariah was 12 years old, as she and some of her family were leaving their native Ireland, headed for America.

Mariah talks about their treacherous migration across the Atlantic Ocean, challenges with life in New York, and a long and grueling wagon trail journey.

It ends with tales of her difficult and always-challenging life as the wife of a homesteader on the midwestern prairies of Nebraska - and of becoming an American.

Cherrie is currently researching historical “Nebraska weather” stories, and would love hearing from anyone who has a story to share to add to her Homesteading anthology.

This was the Women’s Club’s final meeting until reconvening in September, and a 50th anniversary celebration is being planned to be held at that time, to honor all past and present members.

Anyone that is a past member of the Randolph Women’s Club, please reach out to Sherry Bradley, Jo Kilburn, or Dorothy Jensen for further information. If anyone knows of a past member who is no longer living in the Randolph area, please forward their contact information to any of these ladies.
