1940: Adolph Heimes takes over local bakery

HARTINGTON — A set of store teeth lost 12 years earlier were found by Mrs. Walter Nielsen while walking in her potato patch. The teeth were lost by Emil Evanson while stacking straw.

HARTINGTON — A sudden temperature change Monday followed a combination electric hail storm that came from the northeast and brought considerable damage.

The storm struck with most fury in northern Knox and Cedar counties.

HARTINGTON —When the Trinity seniors got ready to leave on their sneak day they found the juniors had let the air out of all the tires on the cars which were to take them to Niobrara.

Limburger cheese was spread on the manifold and the windows soaped. Before leaving they captured two junior boys and took them four miles in the country where they turned them loose to walk back to town.

May 16, 1940

HARTINGTON — Adolph Heimes of Wynot announced the purchase of the former Havorka Bakery, owned by V.C. Havorka.

Heimes will take over immediately. The bakery was established here October 11, by Havorka who previously operated in Randolph.

COLERIDGE — Each spring William A. Burke of Coleridge, has completed his annual cattle drive to O’Neill on horse back.

May 18, 1950

HARTINGTON — Some 700 women packed the city auditorium here Friday afternoon for the Frigidaire cooking school sponsored by Hegert’s Hardware.

There were 657 women registered and in addition girls in the home economics classes at Hartington and Coleridge were also present.

The school demonstration in cooking, deep freezing and laundry practices were presented by Mrs.

Opal Rice. The feature of the afternoon was the giving away of an electric range by the Hegert firm, and this grand prize was received by Mrs. Mildred Ready of Hartington. The REA presented an automatic electric toaster to a farm woman and this gift was received by Mrs. Mary Schulte of Wynot.

May 18, 1950

HARTINGTON — Filing was completed here Wednesday in the office of County Clerk Edward S. Stevens on behalf of Senator Dwight Burney, who will seek reelection to the state legislature from this district for another term.

The Senator’s decision to become a candidate for re-election came after considerable urging by friends who initiated the filing. He has served three terms.

May 26, 1955

HARTINGTON — Leo Kathol was named President of the Hartington Lions Club for the coming year at the annual election of officers Monday evening. Art Hansen was elected first vice president and C.R. Stout, second vice president. Directors elected at the meeting, were P.H. Robinson, Frank Feriss, M.C. Sorensen and V.E. Rossiter.

May 26, 1955

HARTINGTON — Jack Dendinger of Omaha, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Dendinger left Monday for San Antonio, Texas where he will report for active duty with the United States Army.

HARTINGTON —Frederic Stevens received a dislocated wrist and shoulder Friday when the car in which he was riding collided with another auto six miles southwest of Hartington.

Stevens was inspecting a rural mail route with C.J. Dendinger when the accident took place.

Dendinger came over the top of a hill and met a car driven by Donavon Lammers, Sheriff Clements reported. The left front fender of Dendinger’s auto struck the left front fender of Lammers.

Stevens was brought to Dr. F.P.

Dorsey Jr. for treatment.
