LEIGH - The Hartington-Newcastle golf team had its season come to an abrupt halt at the Class D-2 District Golf Meet here Monday.
“The conditions on the day made it difficult to play really well,” said HNS co-coach Mike Johnson. “We knew going into the district we were one of the five teams that had a chance to qualify as a team. Our front nine scores weren’t real good, but the kids did a great job of bouncing back on the back nine and giving us a chance to qualify.”
When the dust settled on the day, the Wildcats fell five shots short of making the state meet.
Creighton won the team title after carding a 341, Bloomfield was second at 358 with Archangels Catholic third at 365. Hartington-Newcastle ended up fifth at 370.
Calvin Wilmes from Creighton won the individual title posting a 78. Jacob Keller of Archangels was second with a 79 and Wilmes’ teammate, Teegan Burns was third with an 82.
For the Wildcats, Barrett Bruning rallied on his second nine to shoot his lowest score of the season but fell a stroke short of qualifying as an individual. Bruning carded an 88 to finish 12th, but 87 qualified for state.
Carter Kelly and Kayne Gratzfeld each posted 91’s, Austin Sudbeck shot a 100 and Grady Lammers had a 121.
“Coach Kneifl and myself are very proud of this team,” Johnson said. “They worked hard all season for us and really improved as the season progressed.”
The coach went on to thank the lone senior, Bruning.
“We appreciate the four years he gave to the program and the impact he had on the program,” said Johnson. “We need to improve this summer and if we do we should have a pretty good team once again next year.”
Johnson also wanted to “thank” others.
“We would like to thank everyone at the golf course for allowing us to practice on the best facilities in northeast Nebraska,” he said. “Keith and Kathy Holm and Jamy McCoy do a lot to help us when it comes to having golf meets and practice. We also want to thank the administration and faculty for being flexible and supporting the golf team.”
