Woman gets to know the area one hair at a time

COLERIDGE – Dalie Paulsen feels like she’s getting to know her hometown community members a little bit better - one haircut at a time.

As the owner of Coleridge’s newest business, Styled by Day, a full-service hair salon, Paulsen said there’s a special kind of magic when someone settles into the salon chair for a haircut. Conversations seem to come easier, flowing as freely as the strands that fall to the floor.

Paulsen graduated from Capitol Beauty School in Omaha and then worked at the Suite T Salon in Wayne. She was unsure at first about opening up a salon in the community of 500 at first - an idea by her father, Loren, that turned out to be shear genius.

“I really didn’t think it was going to work out. Surprisingly, I’ve been busy every week and take walk-ins all the time. It’s pretty nice to get to know the community a little better,” Paulsen said, adding that she grew up about one mile west of town.

It’s not as surprising to those who know her well that she wanted to pursue cosmetology and hairstyling as a career.

Both of her grandmothers Patsy Phillips, Lincoln, and the late Dorothy Paulsen, Coleridge - were hairstylists.

Some residents may recall getting a wash, cut and hot set at Dorothy’s home west of town.

“She washed their hair in her sink and did it the good ol’ way,” Dalie said.

She now cherishes those memories of her mother, Desiree, and grandma styling her hair while she was growing up.

“My mom and my grandma were always big on and loved doing our hair. They always had the most fun doing that,” Dalie said.

Dalie enjoys the work herself and finds it rewarding helping people feel good about themselves. She’s also found that she enjoys being her own boss.

The Styled by Day salon is located in the former Nutrient Ag building right off of Highway 57 near the Bulldog tank. Paulsen offers chemical services, blending, all-over color, perms, along with women’s, men’s and children’s haircuts, waxing and tanning. She also will style hair formally for weddings or school dances.

The salon also carries several brands of hair care products including Gibs, Matrix, Redken, Moroccan Oil, and Pureology, just to name a few. She will also consider customer suggestions for adding products.

The salon is open Tuesday through Saturday and customers can book online at styledbydayy. glossgenius.com (be sure to use two ‘y’s) or by calling 402-283-0005.
