City is again searching for a new City Clerk

HARTINGTON — The City of Hartington is once again looking for a new City Clerk/Treasurer.

Brittni Benscoter, who has been in the position for nearly two years, announced her plans last week to resign. In her letter of resignation, Benscoter said, 'the decision did not come easily, as it has been an honor to serve the residents of the city of Hartington and work alongside a dedicated team.'

The City Council regretfully accepted her resignation at Monday's Council meeting, joking they planned to table the motion indefinitely before eventually accepting her resignation. She told Council members that ever since getting her Master's Degree, she has been wanting to get back into post-secondary education and has taken a position with Wayne State College. Her final day on the job will be May 20,but she said she will, 'do everything possible to insure a smooth transition, including assisting in the transfer of responsibilities as needed.' Mayor Mark Becker expressed the Council's appreciation for the job Benscoter did while in the position. 'Brittni has done a great job for us. I want to thank her for all of her service. She's cleaned up a lot of things for us and she will be missed,' he said. Benscoter started working for the city of Hartington on May 30, 2023, and was appointed as the full-time city clerk-treasurer by the City Council during its meeting on June12, replacing De Waal. This marks the fourth time in the last three years the city will be searching for a city clerk. Natalie Schaecher resigned from the position in 2022. She was replaced by assistant City Clerk Dani De Waal. Benscoter was then hired when De Waal resigned.

They will now open the position to applicants. Assistant City Clerk Casey Schulte is expected to be named interim City Clerk at the next Council meeting. Becker said Schulte has expressed interest in the Clerk's position.
