HARTINGTON — The old Hartington Fire Hall is going on the auction block.
The City Council voted Monday to start the process to sell the building at an Aug. 12 auction through Don Miller Land Company. The building, which was built in 1965, is now only being used for storage.
Council members noted they will not accept any bids lower than $200,000 for the building, which is located at 102 E. Centre St.
Also Monday, the Council approved a permit to allow Fly By Night Fireworks to sell fireworks for the Fourth of July at a location next to Casey’s General Store on Highway 57.
Mayor Mark Becker said he appreciates the fireworks show the business helps put on for residents of the Arbor Care Center. However, he said the show is beginning to turn into quite an event. He’d like to see the city do something to try and make the show more safe.
‘’The show they do for the Seniors is really cool,’’ he said. ‘’I think there is an opportunity to grow this thing, but with all the kids coming up to watch it. It’s a bit of a safety issue (because of Highway 57 traffic),” he said.
Becker said he’d like the Council to consider closing off part of the highway for a few hours in order to make the event safer.
The Council agreed to award the bid for siding the Felber Park Shelter House to Randy Kathol Construction. Councilman Colin Kathol said three companies expressed interest in the bid. The Council accepted Kathol's bid of $20,824.
In other action, the Council approved building permits for:
• Jerrold and Casey Schulte for a shed.
• Holy Trinity Early Learning Center for a shed.
• Lisa Dendinger – for a fire incinerator. The Council also approved adding Cedar-Knox Public Power District employee Chase Dettman to the Hartington Volunteer Fire Department roster.
The Council also approved the annual interlocal agreement with Hartington- Newcastle schools for use of the school busses for the summer. They are used for the swim team and softball and baseball.
