1955: Cedar County man dies in Randolph blaze

May 12, 1955

RANDOLPH - The lifeless body of Arnold Gubbels, 54, who lived alone on his farm southeast of Randolph, was found in the smoldering ruins of his work shop late Thursday afternoon.

Randolph firemen had answered the alarm a short time before and after the fire was extinguished, a brother, Walter Gubbels, discovered the body.

Charles McDermott, Wayne county attorney, and two examining physicians, were called to the farm to investigate the death. No inquest was held.

The alarm was turned in by Mrs. Walter Gubbels after her husband and son had seen the smoke from a field.

When the firemen arrived the building was nearly consumed by the flames.

Brothers of Mr. Gubbels became alarmed when their brother could not be found on the premises, and firemen redoubled their efforts to put out the blaze so a search could be made in the ruins. The body was badly burned, but identification was established.
