HARTINGTON — Friday will mark the end of an era for the Jerry and Adrienne Weier family.
The family, who lives just north of Hartington, will see their youngest of 10 children graduate from Cedar Catholic High School this week.
Jerry and Adrienne have had a child attending Cedar Catholic for the last 25 years (1985 to 2010) and have had kids in their house for 40 years.
They are thankful to have lived in the Hartington area during the years their 10 children were growing up.
“Hartington has been a wonderful city in which to raise a family,” said Adrienne. “It is a great community with quality schools that cooperate in educating our youth, faith-filled churches, a wonderful library and beautiful parks with great recreation programs, but most of all, it is the people who have become good, caring friends to our family.”
The Weiers appreciate the many dedicated teachers at Holy Trinity, Cedar Catholic and Hartington Public who help teach students for success.
The Weiers were happy to have had the opportunity to send their children to the Catholic school which they felt was important for their family.
“It helped establish their faith,” said Adrienne. “Cedar Catholic has had so many fantastic teachers, priests and staff over the 43 years we have been involved with the school.”
Jerry arrived in Hartington in 1967 when he accepted a job at Cedar Catholic — his first teaching job.
Jerry taught business, accounting and computers during the 43-year span until he retired in 2006 due to health concerns.
Jerry was just five years older than some of the first kids he taught in Hartington – some of those students are friends of his today.
Jerry has also been the teacher for children and grandchildren of former students.
Adrienne taught for two years in Minnesota before she and Jerry were married. After her first child was born, she used her education to teach her children at home.

HARTINGTON — Tuesday’s election featured a hotly contested and highly anticipated rematch between Cedar County Commissioner Dave McGregor and former Commissioner Dick Donner.
Cedar County Clerk Dave Dowling said just 26 percent of Cedar County’s registered voters cast ballots in the election, which was completed in record time. All races were final by nine p.m. Tuesday.
McGregor pulled in 287 votes, while there were 196 votes for Donner.
Four years ago McGregor beat Donner, who was serving as commissioner in the middle district, by only six votes.
McGregor said he was very pleased with the results of the election.
“I am thankful for the support I had and for the people who helped with the campaign,” McGregor said. “I will continue to work hard for the people in Cedar County.”
In the north district Terry Pinkelman, with 164 votes, beat Merle Tramp who had just 71 votes.
Pinkelman and Tramp, who are both Democratic candidates, filed to replace Commissioner Frederick Pinkelman who did not seek another term.
