Cedar Catholic track teams compete at BC

BATTLE CREEK - Cedar Catholic traveled to Battle Creek May 8 and the Trojans placed third and Lady Trojans wound up sixth at the end of the day.

Battle Creek swept the team titles in both divisions with the Braves outrunning West Holt 170125 and the Bravettes in front of the Lady Huskies 145-122.

The Trojans posted 68 points and the Lady Trojans accounting for 33.2 points.

“We had our kids try some different things in this meet,” Cedar Catholic coach, Blair Kalin said. “Our relays ran fairly well.”

Cooper Hochstein accounted for the lone win for the Trojans individually, winning the 400 in 53.38 seconds.

“Cooper ran really well at this meet,” said Kalin. “He has a good shot to really run a good time at districts.”

Cedar also got 10 points from its 3,200-meter relay team.

Nolan Becker, Hunter Kuchta, Matt Loecker and Kighter Wortmann did eight laps in 8:38.92 to earn their gold.

Jared Rutar had a good day in the throws taking second in the shot and discus.

He heaved the shot 48-feet-8-inches and tossed the discus 149-05. Teammate Graham Potts was third in the discus and also placed six in shot.

Aaron Wortmann was fourth in the high jump, Keyton Arens was fourth in the pole vault, Brady Hochstein was fifth in the long jump and Mason Baller was sixth in the 100.

Nolan Heimes hurdled his way to fifth in the 300 hurdles.

“Nolan has really improved in the hurdles,” said Kalin.”He’s peaking at the right time.”

The Trojan 400-meter relay squad placed third, the 1,600 team placed fifth and a sprint medley team of Grady Haberer, Donnie Schulte, Landon Rutar and Joe Bowen also placed fifth.

For the Lady Trojans, Anisten Wortmann won the 100-meter hurdle title and the 3,200 meter quartet of Madison Eickhoff, Brynn Bernecker, Claire Rolfes and Kally Becker ran the distance in 10:19.82 to takethat gold.

A sprint medley team of Lauren Bernecker, Brynn Bernecker, Becker and Kendra Schmit carried the baton 800 meters in 4:35.81 for second place.

Isabel Rolfes was sixth in the 1,600 and also placed sixth in the high jump.

Adelyn Reifenrath placed fourth in the triple jump.

“I like where we are going into districts,” Kalin said. “We have some injuries, but we hope we can fight through that. We want to try to be at the top for the team titles at districts and get as many kids to state as we can.”

The Trojans and Lady Trojans enter District action May 15.
