PIERCE - The Cedar Catholic golf team had a very busy and successful week as the Trojans won a couple of invitationals in the past seven days and finished second in a third.
Cedar Catholic ran away from the field in the Pierce Invitational May 3 after carding a team total of 320, 27 strokes ahead of runner-up Randolph at 347.
On April 30, the Trojans went to Tatanka Golf Club for the Tatanka High School Invitational claiming runner-up honors there.
Earlier in the week the Trojans edged O’Neill 334336 to win the Hartington-Newcastle Invitational at the Hartington Golf Course.
“The kids have responded great as a team,” said Cedar Catholic golf coach, Rick Kuehn. “We improved our score in every meet we had.”
At Pierce, Maverick Heine had the round of his life, carding a 71 to take medalist honors, leading the Trojans who put four golfers in the medals in the meet.
Langston Christensen fired an 80 to come in fifth, Memphis Ulrich used an 84 to place 11th and Landyn Kaiser was 12th with an 85. Toby Heine finished just out of the medals at 87 which put him 17th.
Cooper Wachholtz was second to Mav Heine four shots back and Talon Carson from Laurel-Concord-Coleridge was third after posting a 77.
In the middle of the week, Cedar Catholic placed second in the Tatanka High School Invitational led by Ulrich who carded a 76 for first place.
Toby Heine finished fifth with a 79, Mav Heine was eighth with an 80, Kaiser posted a 93 and Christensen finished with a 94.
The Trojans slipped past O’Neill in the HNS invite with Christensen taking his turn near the top of the podium coming in second to Jace Wahls of Ponca by a single stroke.
Wahls had an 80 and Christensen edged out two O’Neill golfers at 81 after a scorecard playoff.
Toby Heine was fifth with an 82, Ulrich was 10th at 83, Mav Heine posted an 88 and Kaiser landed with a 91.
“I really don’t feel like we have put together our best performance as team,” Kuhn said. “We talked to them about how many shots they left out on the course. We are definitely getting better and need to continue to do so.”
The Trojans were set to travel to highland Oaks Golf Course near Ponca for the Mid-State Conference Tournament on May 6 before heading to Battle Creek for the Braves Invite on May 8.
