ATKINSON - The first-ever Greater Northeast Activities Conference Track and Field Championships were held May 3 at West Holt High School and the hosts took advantage of some home cooking as the Huskies and Lady Huskies ran away with both of the big trophies by a large margin in each division.
Hartington-Newcastle placed fifth and fourth in the team races for the boys and girls respectively.
West Holt’s boys posted 217 points, well over 100 points better than the runner-up, Summerland which finished with 75. The Wildcats scored 64.
The Lady Huskies scored 205, well ahead of second place, Elkhorn Valley which score 82.5.
The Lady Wildcats scored 53.5 points.
Cole Rosener had a great day on the track, bringing home two gold medals in the 100 and long jump as well as fifth-place medal for the 800 and one in a relay.
Rosener clipped off his 100 meters in 11.87 seconds and hit the sand after sailing 20-feet-6.5-inches to win the long jump.
Mason Krause also had a productive day, taking second in the triple jump with a best of 41’ 2.5”, a fourth in the 200 and a sixth in the long jump.
Jason Heimes brought home a couple of fifth-place medals in the 400 and the pole vault. Maximus McCray was fourth in the triple jump behind Krause, Colton Cavanaugh placed fifth in discus and Isaac Santiago was fifth 3,200-meter run.
The Wildcats 400-meter relay team consisting of Landon Clark, Gabriel Reyes, McCray and Jason Heimes placed second, circling the track in 47.09.
The 1,600 squad of McCray, Krause, Jason Heimes and Rosener as well as the 3,200 team of Santiago, Reyes, Brayden Lammers and Dane Gotch, both placed fourth.
The Lady Wildcats were paced by Carmen Buschkamp in the distance races, Vayda Lippert in the middle distances, Ella Eickhoff in the hurdles and Jade Ford in the jumps.
Buschkamp was second in the 3,200 with a time of 13:17.99 and fifth in the 1,600.
Lippert was second in the 800, circling the track twice in 2:29.57, fifth in the high jump and sixth in the 400.
Eickhoff was second in the 300 hurdles, fifth in the 100 hurdles and fifth in the pole vault.
Teammate, Hazel Hochstein was fourth in the pole vault.
Ford placed fifth in both the long and triple jumps and Abi Rice was sixth in the 100.
The 400 meter relay team of Rice, Maddie Steffen, Hochstein and Ford placed third with a time of 54.55 seconds.
The 1,600 group of Eickhoff, Steffen, Hochstein and Lippert placed fourth and the 3,200 team of Karissa Bruning, Jaden Opfer, Kora Kneifl and Emily Climer placed fifth.
Both teams will head to the Norfolk Catholic Invitational on May 8 before heading to district track on May 14 in Humphrey.
