Freshman hurdler leads Bears at LCC Invitational

LAUREL - Haskell Field was busy with competitors April 22 at the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Invitational Track and Field Meet.

Yutan traveled all the way north to take home both of the team trophies on the day with the Yutan boys posting 127 team points and the girls putting up 137 to take the titles.

Creighton was second in the boys’ standings with 85, Ponca was third with 82 and Pender was fourth with 63. The Bears ended up seventh with 25.

Pender was second on the girls’ side with 106, Ponca was third with 67 and Tri County Northeast was fourth with 66. The Lady Bears posted 38 points which was good enough for sixth in the team standings.

Drey Puppe continued with his very successful freshman campaign with a win in the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.47 seconds to win over Taylor Nilson of Creighton by over a full second.

Puppe also earned a point in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5-feet-8-inches placing him sixth.

Connor Korth was fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:20.79 and Jaylen Carpenter was fifth in the shot put with a heave of 40’ 4”.

The Bears scored some points in the relays with 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter quartets each getting fourth.

The 1,600 team of Hunter Mc-Ghee, Carter Korth, Hunter Benson and Ian Sohler circled the oval four times in 3:38.96 for the medal and the 3,200 squad of Shane Langford, Sebastiaan Van Drongelen, Benson and Carter Korth covered the distance in 9:28.91.

Tali Erwin took home another gold medal in the high jump, clearing 5’ for the win and Carlie Kvols was second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:33.84 to pace the Lady Bears.

Kate Tasler had a very successful day placing fourth in the 1,600 and also had a hand in a couple of fourth-place finishes in the relays.

Faith Galvin also placed fourth in the 3,200-meter run.

The LCC relays all placed fourth. Hattie McCorkindale, Taelynn Settje, Grace Galvin and Jolynn Kinkaid got the baton around the track in 54.27 seconds for fourth.

McCorkindale, Erwin, Tasler and Kvols toted it around the track four times in 4:27.79 for fourth and Kvols, Tyler Recob, Justice Olson and Tasler did it eight times in 10:46.97 for a fourth-place medal.

The Bears and Lady Bears were set to head to Ponca for the Ponca Invitational on April 29 then head to the Greater Northeast Activities Conference Meet on May 3 in Atkinson at West Holt High School.

LCC will run in the Winside Invitational May 8 at Haskell Field.
