COLERIDGE — The 1950 telephone directories have been completed and were distributed this week. L. C. Doelz, manager of the telephone company, requests that all old books be destroyed and only the new books be used. The name Hansen appears in the book more than any other name. Sixteen telephone patrons have the name Hansen. The runner-up spot goes to the name Meier, which appears 12 times, followed closely by Frerichs, which appears 11 times. The new directories were printed at the Blade Office.

COLERIDGE — Miss Grace Robertson and Leonard Andrus luckily escaped serious injuries Sunday afternoon when Mr. Andrus lost control of his car and it went down an embankment and overturned east of Fordyce.
Mr. Andrus reported the car hit a rut in the road and careened off the road before he could get control of the vehicle. Shortly after the accident the car caught on fire and was completely burned. The Hartington Fire Department was called to the scene of the accident. Both Miss Robertson and Mr.
Andrus escaped with minor injures although they were both badly shaken up. The car was completely burned out on the inside and all the wiring in the motor was burned. Sheriff Ralph Clements covered the accident.

COLERIDGE — Mrs. Roy Benjamin reported this week that a group of pansies began to bloom in her yard. They are doing well as no special protection has been given them other than the past winter’s snow cover.

COLERIDGE — An early morning fire at the Galen Frerichs farm northeast of Coleridge last Thursday morning completely leveled a machine shed in the foreground and gutted the chicken house. The origin of the fire was undetermined and was well underway before discovered.
There was some loss of machinery and 300 chickens were killed in the larger building.

COLERIDGE — Coleridge’s sevenman track team received fifth place in the Conference Track Meet held at Wayne. The 880-yd. relay team got the only first for Coleridge by running a 1:47. Val Dean Dittman, Gerald Konken, Tom Morrison and Rick Ward comprise the team. In the 100-yd. dash, Rick Ward and Roger Fleener took second and third places. Roger Fleener received fifth in the 220. Tom Morrison and Gerald Konken grabbed second and third in the 440. Rick Ward placed fifth in the broad jump and shot put. Tom Morrison placed fifth in the discus event.

COLERIDGE — The Bulldogs took sixth place in a field of 22 schools at the Blue Devil Relays at Wayne.
Dave Fox, competing in the long jump, broke a local school record established in 1953 by Cliff Hinrichs.
Fox jumped 20 feet, 4-1/4 inches, eclipsing the old mark of Hinrichs, which was 20 feet, 2.7 inches. The new mark was good for a fourth place in the broad jump competition. Fox also won a first place in the 100 yard dash with a 10.4. Ed Kalin was fourth in the pole vault with 11 feet. In the mile medley, G. Wolfe, M. Kalin, D. Fox, and R. Brodersen scored a fourth. D. Fox, C. Eddie, M. Kalin, and R. Brodersen won a second in the sprint medley.

COLERIDGE — The Coleridge Commercial Club will remain open Saturday nights beginning this Saturday, May 2. The move is for the convenience of the local farmers as field work is beginning to now get underway. The stores will close at 9:00 p.m.

COLERIDGE — Mr. Larry Nordby this week announced the sale of his tavern to Mr. Ralph Felber who has assumed ownership and is operating the business.
The business will now be known as Felber’s Tavern.

COLERIDGE — Bruce Nordby and Kenny Koch were First Place over-all winners at the Coleridge Community Schools Science Fair. Their science project was on the Solar Engine.

COLERIDGE — Marlin Papenhausen high jumped 6’4” to equal the 1979 State Class D record and eclipse the past school record of 6’ held by Larry Rathgeber and Kevin Krei.
Scott Anderson, Brian Hefner, Brian Feelhaver, and Monte Olsen took the 2-mile relay record from Greg Meier, Rod Meier, Randy Papenhausen, and Greg Thomas.
Their time was 8:55.4, six-tenths of a second faster than the old record.
George Hefner, Brian Hefner, Monte Olsen and Scott Anderson also set a new mile medley record in a time of 4:02.2 to better the old record of 4:06.1 held by Brian Hefner, Dennis Heitman, Scott Anderson and John Hines.
