1995: Skylon Ballroom goes on the sale block

April 26, 1995

HARTINGTON — The Hartington soccer program took another step toward reality last week.

Hartington Parks and Recreation Board members met with parents to lay down ground rules and explain the league’s format. The organizational meeting, held at Gerry Miller Implement, was set up to inform the adult volunteers about schedules, teams, rules, the number of players and other basics.

There are over 200 kids signed up for the program ranging in age from kindergarten to sixth grade. The first practice of the inaugural season will be June 7 at Carkoski Field.

OMAHA — Two area men were recently honored for their dedication to the Catholic Church. Msgr. Cyril Werner and Father Franklin Dvorak were two of 11 people honored at the 1995 Priests Jubilee Dinner at Mount Michael Benedictine Abbey.

Werner, 75, is being honored for 50 years in the priesthood. Dvorak, 51, is being honored for 25 years in the priesthood. Msgr. Werner is currently living in retirement in Hartington. In his early priesthood, he was an assistant pastor at three Omaha parishes and at St. Patricks parish in O’Neill. He then served as pastor at four Cedar County parishes — Sts. Philip and James in St. James, St. John the Baptist in Fordcye, Holy Trinity in Hartington and Immaculate Conception in St. Helena.

HARTINGTON —The final note in the long musical history of the Skylon Ballroom may be sung Saturday.

Unless a buyer is found, the Skylon Ballroom will close its doors for good after Saturday’s dance.

The land and facility, located at the intersection of Highway 15 and Highway 84, is being offered for sale by Don Miller Land Company.

For nearly half a century, the Skylon Ballroom has been the only dance hall in Cedar County providing weekly entertainment for all ages. The Skylon was built in 1952 by Hartington businessman Ferdie Petiz and Hoesing Brothers Construction.

Peitz merged pieces of another historic structure —the Homewood Park Ballroom —with new material to create the Skylon. The Homewood Park Ballroom was located in the Homewood Park Resort north of Wynot on the Missouri River. Peitz also managed that ballroom. The resort, which also featured cabins and a swimming pool, faced a constant threat of flooding from the Mighty Missouri.
