HARTINGTON — The Cedar Catholic track teams hosted the Trojan Invitational on April 15 and the boys team came away with the team title while the Lady Trojans ended up fourth.
Cedar Catholic parlayed four individual winners and a pair of firsts in two of the three relays into 135 points to outdistance runner-up Creighton by 37 points.
Tri County Northeast won the girls championship with 107 points, Wausa was second with 99, Crofton was third with 93 and the Lady Trojans posted 83.
“We really got contributions from several participants,” said Cedar Catholic coach, Blair Kalin. “We really had some good performances which was good to see. We had good weather and the kids responded.”
The middle distance runners and Jared Rutar paced the Trojans run to first place.
Kighter Wortmann led a 1-2-3 finish in the 800-meter run circling the track twice in 2 minutes, 8.46 seconds to claim his gold, Matthew Loecker was second in 2:10.23 and Alex Elks was third in 2:14.38. Teammate Brayden Fischer placed fifth but his score didn’t count towards the Trojans’ total.
Rutar won the shot and the discus with a heave of 49-feet-3.5-inches in the shot and a 139-09 effort in the discus.
“Jared is really looking good in the throws,” said Kalin. “He had a personal best in the shot and has been working really hard.”
Sam Wiebelhaus was third in the discus and sixth in the shot for Cedar Catholic while Graham Potts was sixth in the discus.
Mason Baller won the 200 for the other individual win and joined Booker Hochstein, Micah Cattau and Cooper Hochstein to win the 400-meter relay.
The 3,200-meter team of Nolan Becker, Hunter Kuchta, Wortmann and Loecker also won gold medals.
The Cedar Catholic 1,600-meter group of Booker Hochstein, Becker, Kuchta and Loecker placed second.
Baller was also third in the 100, Cooper Hochstein was fifth in the event.
Kuchta and Aaron Wortmann were fifth and sixth in the 400 while Nolan Heimes was third in the 110-meter high hurdles and sixth in the 300 hurdles.
Micah Cattau was third in the 300’s and Easton Hochstein was fifth in the 110 hurdles and sixth in the long jump.
Landon Rutar placed fifth in the triple jump and Quinn Hochstein was sixth in the pole vault behind teammate Keyton Arens, who cleared 11-07 to place fourth.
The girls were led by Anisten Wortmann, the Bernecker sisters and a couple of relays.
Wortmann set a school record in the 300 hurdles, running and jumping the distance in 46.82 in only her second attempt at the race. She also won the 100 hurdles in 16.0, her best run of the season.
Brynn Bernecker won the 800 and Lauren Bernecker was second in the 400 and teammate Claire Rolfes was fourth in the 800.
Adelyn Reifenrath continues to improve in the jumps and won the triple jump and placed fifth in the long jump.
Isabel Rolfes was third in the 1,600 and sixth in the high jump while Madison Eickhoff was fifth high jump.
The 1,600-meter relay squad consisted of Brynn Bernecker, Kally Becker, Lauren Bernecker and Eickhoff who got the baton around the track four times in 4:20.98 to win the event and the 3,200 squad of Lauren Bernecker, Eickhoff, Becker and Claire Rolfes did eight laps in 10:17.20 for first.
The Trojans and Lady Trojans will head to Pierce for an invitational on April 24.
“The girls have really had some improved performances,” said Kalin. “If both the girls and boys teams keep improving and working hard we should have a solid chance to finish real high at district time.”
