Cedar County Theatre set to take the stage

HARTINGTON — After taking a year off, the Cedar County Theatre is once again ready to amuse and entertain area residents.

The local theatre troupe will put on the play 'The Curious Savage,' this week at the Hartington City Auditorium.

There will be performances this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The curtain goes up at 7:30 p.m. each night.

This year's production is being directed by long-time Cedar County Theatre member Lee Carl.

Carl said he chose this play because he wanted to put something fun onto the local stage.

He was familiar with this particular play because it happens to be the one in which he first made his acting debut as a cast member in Hartington Public's version back when Loxie Wolf directed the local productions.

'It's just a fun play,' Carl said. The play, which is set in the 1950s, stars Christine Archer as wealthy widow Ethel Savage, who’s been committed to a sanatorium by her stepchildren after she decides to use her late husband’s fortune to help others rather than fund their selfish lifestyles.

Other local actors include: Amy Dickes, Delon Kathol, Karma Schulte, Andrew Zach, Tyler Olsen, Marcella Gothier, Audrey McCray, Lisa Kucera, Cheyanne Zach, and Brett Wiedenfeld.

McCray, Lisa Kucera, Cheyanne Zach, and Olsen are all newcomers to the Cedar County Theatre stage, while the others have all performed with the local troupe in the past.

The play is a classic portrayal of kindness, greed, and what it really means to be “normal.”

Inside the institution, Mrs. Savage meets a group of quirky, gentle residents who help her realize the world outside may be far crazier than within.

Written by John Patrick, The Curious Savage mixes witty dialogue with tender moments. It’s a warm, often funny reminder that compassion and decency matter more than status or wealth.
