1925: Firemen could be fined, ousted if they’re not on the job

April 2, 1925

HARTINGTON - H. C. Bredemeyer, for seven years connected with the Snygg Bros. general store at Magnet, was secured as manager of the local Farmer’s Union Exchange at a special meeting of the board of directors held here Tuesday.

Mr. Bredemeyer will arrive today and is expected to take up his duties immediately.

The immediate selection of a new manager was made necessary by the continued illness of J. B. Thompson, who has been unable to give much time to the work for the past few weeks and who insisted upon being released from the responsibilities of the position. Mr. Thompson has gone to his farm east of town to recuperate.

Mr. Bredemeyer, the new manager, is a man of pleasing personality, long experienced in merchandising, having been associated with firms at Emerson and Belden before locating at Magnet where he has held a most responsible position.

Mr. Bredemeyer lost his wife, whose maiden name was Cunningham and who resided north of Randolph, and one son during the flu epidemic several years ago.

HARTINGTON - Members of the Hartington fire department will either be present at meetings of the department in the future or they are apt to find themselves on the outside looking in, following the proposal of a new set of rules and by-laws at a meeting Wednesday evening.

Under the rules which were proposed, a member is fined 25 cents if he is absent from one meeting.

If he misses the next meeting, an additional fine of 25 cents is assessed against him. Missing the third meeting carries with it a fine of $1.00 and suspension from the active list of the department.

Should the member then wish to get back on the active list, he must pay his fines and take his turn for reinstatement.

Another rule which was proposed provides that a member who fails to turn out for a fire shall be fined $1.00.

On the other hand, if he is present at the fire and reports back to the fire hall afterwards, he is paid $1.00. A reasonable excuse for his absence either from a fire or from a meeting of the department will relieve the member from paying any fines.

Regular meeting dates for the department were changed by another proposal from the first Wednesday of each month to the second Friday.

All of the new rulings are but tentative now, but will come up for formal adoption at the next regular meeting.

Every effort is being made to reorganize the department on a most efficient basis, and eventually the members who are on the job for all the meetings and fires will be the ones who compose the active list, the others being dropped to an inactive status.

The work of the department can then be carried on effectively, with every member trained in the duties which he is to perform.
