1950: 100 mph winds knock down wall

75 Years Ago - March 9, 1950 RANDOLPH – Over two-thirds of the east wall of the Carhart Lumber Co. collapsed Tuesday afternoon, leaving a gap of 75 feet long and 12 feet high in the tile wall. The north door of the areaway of the lumber yard was blown in, pushed out by the terrific gale. Shortly after two o’clock, a peak velocity of wind was registered at 100 miles per hour at the official weather bureau station in Norfolk, and it was about that time that the wall collapsed.
