WEST POINT - The Cedar Catholic girls basketball team took on Battle Creek in the opening round of the Mid State Conference Tournament Monday.
The Lady Trojans turned away the Bravettes 41-36 to advance to the semifinals Feb. 6 at the Msgr. Werner Activities Center and will take on GACC who defeated Wayne to advance to the semis with that match up set to tip off at around 7:30 p.m. after the first game involving Crofton and Pierce.
The winners of those two games will advance to the conference final which is also set for the Werner Activities Center at 5 p.m. on Feb. 8.
Earlier in the week, the Lady Trojans won two games while preparing for the Mid State Tournament, defeating Plainview on the road, 44-21 on Jan. 30 after turning back Ponca, 54-40 in a game played in Hartington.
Against the Lady Pirates, the Lady Trojans used a solid defensive effort to get away from Plainview, outscoring their opponent at every rest stop.
It was 13-3 at the first rest, 24-11 at the half, 36-16 at the end of three and when the dust settled the deficit was 23.
Addison Walter had a good offensive game, putting in 19 points on the evening followed by Katelyn Arens and her steady 11 points and boards for a double-double.
Anisten Wortmann contributed eight points, Lauren Bernecker handed out four assists and Bailey Hochstein swiped three steals.
Wortmann paced the Lady Trojans against the Lady Indians pouring in 21 points including an 11-for-16 performance from the foul line.
Cedar Catholic got out early again leading 10-6 at the end of one then going up 23-17 at the intermission.
The Lady Trojans turned up the defensive heat in the third quarter, limiting Ponca to just seven points and Cedar held on for the 14-point win.
Walter added 13 points to Wortmann’s outing, Arens tossed in seven and added seven boards, Wortmann grabbed six and Walter hauled in five missed shots.
Berneker dished out another four assists and Hochstein again had three steals.
Cedar Catholic has a couple of tough road games waiting after the Mid State tournament. Both on the road.
The Lady Trojans are set to travel to Elkhorn Valley, which is currently undefeated, that game is scheduled for Feb. 11 in Tilden then another pass at the Bravettes in Battle Creek on Feb. 13.
