Wynot Blue Devils’ rally falls short at Ponca

PONCA—TheWynotBlueDevilsfell behind early in their basketball game against the Ponca Indians but then rallied to get within three points with just a minute left in the game before falling 48-41.

In what turned into a very physical game both teams struggled offensively inthefirsthalf.Thetwoteamscombined to shoot 39 free throws for the game.

Tucker McGill led the Indians with 15 points hitting 7-8 free throws in the fourth quarter when the game was on the line. Trystan Bevelhyn finished with double figures with his 10 points. Wynot was led by Killian Steinhaus who finished with 12 points. Kasen Koch,DevinBrummerandKotnerKoch all hit three pointers for the Blue Devils.

Both teams started out slowly. Ponca got a pair of three pointers from Trystan Bevelhyn who hit twice from distance. Devin Brummer had a three for Wynot as Ponca took the early 9-5 lead.

In the second quarter both teams continued to have trouble finding the bucket. Austin Dendinger had a pair of lay ins for Ponca. Wynot got five points from Killian Steinhaus as scoring was at a premium with Ponca holding the 17-12 advantage at halftime.

The offensive production picked up in the third quarter. Wynot got fivepoints from Kasen Koch, a three pointer by Justin Heimes and a trio of free throws by Carter Hans. Ponca countered with five points from Tucker McGill, four points from Trystan Bevelhyn and trey by Mickenon Peterson to build a 33-25 lead going into the final quarter.

Wynot would stage a late rally. Six points from Kotner Koch, a bucket by Andrew Haberman and two long range threes by Killian Steinhaus cut Ponca’s lead to 3 points with just 43 seconds left in the game. Ponca would fight off the rally hitting 8 of 10 free throws in the final minutes to preserve the 48-41 win.
