Article sheds light on how Christmas was celebrated here a century ago

Dec. 25, 1924

HARTINGTON — Today the world will once again celebrate the anniversary of the birth of the King of Kings, and that great event will be observed by the Hartington churches and Sunday schools.

The Christmas services began with the Sunday school program and the “White Gifts “ service at eight o’clock Wednesday evening at the Congregational Church. At this time, offerings of goods and of money were made for worthy causes. AtmidnightWednesday night, Holy Trinity Catholic Church opened its Christmas day with the celebration of the Midnight Mass at which a well-trained choir sings the glorious message of “Peace on Earth, Good Will to Man.”

Other services followed at 8 and 10:30.

At eight o’clock tonight, Sunday school programs and Christmas song services will be held at Trinity Lutheran and Swedish Lutheran churches.

Family reunions and dinner parties are also being held all over the community and the spirit of Christmas seems to be everywhere one looks.
