Hot start leads Trojans to big win

CROFTON - Cedar Catholic jumped all over Crofton here on Dec. 17, sprinting to a 23-0 lead at the end of the first eight minutes.

The lead would go to 25-0 early in the second quarter before the Warriors finally scored, and the Trojans stayed in front the rest of the way winding up with a 74-52 win to get to .500 heading into the Christmas break.

“We began the game locked in and played with a purpose offensively and defensively,” Cedar Catholic coach, Nick Haselhorst said. “We improved our execution in all aspects of the game.”

The lead was at 41-17 at the intermission and Crofton trimmed a basket off of the Cedar Catholic advantage in the third quarter as the session ended with the Trojans still up, 60-38. The teams played to a stalemate in the final quarter.

Nolan Becker paced the Cedar Catholic offense with 21 points and six rebounds. Jacob Steffen added 19 points and had five boards, Mason Baller chipped in with 13 points.

Jaymison Cattau handed out nine assists on the night and Baller swiped three steals.

Cedar Catholic will have more than a week off as it awaits the opening tip of the Wayne Holiday Tournament at Rice Auditorium on the campus of Wayne State College.

The Trojans will take on 5-0 Pender in the opening round on Friday, Dec. 27.

“We are pleased with where we are at right now,” Haselhorst said. “But we know we have plenty to work on and we look forward to our next challenge.”
